Where can I go with this GPA?

I was wondering if i am able to go to the prestigious schools like Johns Hopkins, UC Berkeley, UCLA, Upenn, etc with a 3.6-3.7 GPA

Definitely not UCLA, Berkeley, or UPenn with that GPA, unless you bring something exceptional to the table.

Sure, but that’s true if you have a 4.0 too.

Assuming you mean unweighted GPA, I don’t think 3.7 is so low that you shouldn’t bother. They consider test scores and other things too.

@dubaitragedy- did you get into one of the schoole you mentioned?
@halcyonheather- yes, it is unweighted. But I have done a lot of clubs/extracurricular activities like cross country, track(indoor and outdoor), volunteering since 8th grade, national honor society(regular and math), math team, it’s academic, and orchestra. Do you think I still have a chance?

What are your SAT scores?

I haven’t taken my SAT yet… But let’s just say I get a 2000-2080 range…

Just look at the common data sets for the students who go to these schools. Google “University Name Common Data Set” and they have all the statistics on the students they admit, including average ACT/SAT scores, gpa, etc…

It’s statistically impossible to determine a concrete chance of acceptance since admissions teams are unpredictable and impulsive (especially at more selective colleges)

“Definitely not UCLA, Berkeley, or UPenn with that GPA, unless you bring something exceptional to the table.”

^ Don’t listen to that moron. Colleges are holistic, it’s not all black and white. Just apply, see what happens. That’s not an awful GPA.

Make sure to have at least one safety school. I would also recommend running net price calculators to make sure you can afford these schools (especially if you’re out-of-state for the UC schools).

@coh2272 I’m in the same boat except my sat score is a little higher. However, just go to results threads on this site for the schools you’ve mentioned. Those threads could give you a better feeling about your chances.

@ch1746 I’m not being unexceptionally harsh. One of those is an Ivy League. The rest are hard enough to get into even with a 4.0. College admissions ARE holistic, but this GPA is lower than the average admitted, although it’s perfectly fine for other absolutely amazing schools. I’m not saying the OP shouldn’t try, but it’s very unlikely.

@dubaitragedy I don’t think so. Just because their GPA is a little bit below AVERAGE doesn’t mean that they won’t get in or that their chances are low. Besides, it depends on the school; there are some rigorous schools that a 3.4 is equal to a 4.0.

If your SATs, ECs, and essays are above average then yeah you have a chance.

@SwaggyC- This is my transcipt right now…

That’s a lot of Bs and not very many APs dude. Try to get a really high SAT/ACT score. You have a chance to get into one but don’t count on it being a guarantee.

@Meander You’re right, some rigorous schools do have 3.4s that are seen as equivalent to 4.0s, I applied to a few myself. Those schools are not UC Berkeley, UCLA, UPenn, or Johns Hopkins. They have more than enough kids with perfect records applying. The OP wanted to know his or her chances, I’m just being honest. They’re reaches.

@dubaitragedy- Did u get into UCB, UCLA, UPenn, or JHU?

@coh2272 I didn’t apply to any of those schools personally. I did, however, have very close friends and family apply.

@coh2272, @dubaitragedy doesn’t have to be a current student at one of those schools for his opinion to be valid. I’m waiting to hear back from two of those schools, and I’m expecting double rejections. To be a competitive applicant academically, you want to have a 3.8+, 2200+ SAT’s, with top 5% class rank, and the most rigorous course load available at your school. I have all of those things except for the 2200 SAT (I have a 2120, aka an extremely weak score to 99% of the people reading this.) Now, just like me, if you’re lacking in one area it doesn’t mean you’re out. That’s why I still applied. However, I have a 3.93 UW GPA and 15 AP classes, which takes some of the edge off my low SAT score. So, you still have a shot academically if you can pull your SAT up to around a 2200+, and try to get 3.75+ for your UW GPA.

Now, regarding your EC’s, they’re alright. The only problem is that I didn’t see any leadership. If Penn wanted to, they could fill their class with 2400 valedictorians. However, Penn, JHU, Berkley, UCLA, etc. have holistic admissions (less so for the UC’s due to all of the point system rumors), and really look for leaders who pass the academic hurdle (what I mentioned above), but are still special in some way, with tons of leadership. If you’re a junior now, you still have time to get leadership for next year in the activities you’re involved in. If you do anything outside of school involving leadership, make sure you put it down.

I’ll have around exactly 3.70 GPA UW by this year (if you don’t count senior year)… And would it be fine if I try to run for student government or be a leader in a club that I haven’t ever attended or a club that is not popular?
