I am just interested in learning about electronics, i.e. how to make devices, etc from spare parts, just wondering where I can learn about this stuff on my own?

Get a kit from Radio Shack then get a book on electric circuits that are meant for technicians and not engineers.

Get an electronics kit, a child’s one if you have to, and starting making stuff. Best way to start learning.

This is an area that has grown tremendously in the past few years. About a year ago I subscribed to MAKE magazine. You can probably pick up a copy at your local Barnes and Noble. Great stories and how to’s on a large range of subjects. You can also lookup “makerspaces” or “hackerspaces” in your area and be able to work with folks there.

Granted, a lot of these groups move more into what could be considered art, rather than engineering, but they all focus on making stuff.
