Where can I learn AP Latin?

My school only offers IB Latin, and unfortunately I will not be able to take it next year. Does anyone know where I can take an AP Latin class, preferably online? I have been taking Latin for 3 years, and this year we studied Ovid and some Vergil.

I would consider self-studying Latin, but how would I do so? What books would I need to buy?

Look at the Cambridge course

Hi!

I’m a homeschooled student who has been self-studying Latin for about two years (more or less, can’t remember) and I think I can answer your question.

First, I would look for a good copy of the Aeneid. I guess that sounds obvious, but some people don’t actually make the connection. The Loeb Classical Library offers it in two volumes (one volume is books 1-6, second 7-12) which the original text and a rough translation.

Second, get a book to review basic (declensions, basic conjugations, etc.) to advanced (Jussive Noun Clauses, etc.) grammar. Wheelock’s is fine. A book I like which is more succint is Excelability in Advanced Latin.

Third, this is optional, but get a Latin-English dictionary. Cassell’s works fine.

I’m actually taking AP Latin Vergil this summer and the following academic year so I don’t know how helpful my advice will be, but I still hope this is helpful.

Thanks guys. I’ll look into Cambridge, and I already have Wheelock’s and Aeneid.

I’m an incoming senior who took Latin IV the 2011-12 school year (this past year). I got a 5 on the AP. Even though I was in a class, I had to self-study on my own a lot. However, I’ve heard from my teacher that the curriculum is changing to include several passages from Caesar. You might want to check on this information before you start.

And you would probably want a dictionary, as well as Clyde Pharr’s Vergil, books 1-6. The latter is an invaluable resource.

Hello dingbat12,

Can you make any further recommendations? It would be really helpful coming from someone who has done well on the exam. By the way, I believe the change to the curriculum will be adding several passages from the Gallic Wars.

Thanks.
