Where Can I start Applying for Scholarships

I don’t know if all this information is needed but I am a Urm student with an 1860 SAT and 27 ACT. I go to a private high school and was told there should be many scholarships available to me. My question is where can I go to apply to receive some of these scholarships?

The best scholarships that provide money for all four years (rather than just for freshman year) come from the colleges.

Which URM are you?

African American

What state do you live in?

Are you a HS junior or senior?

Connecticut

Senior

The best will be from the colleges, but your high school guidance office and/or web site may have other local scholarships as well. In D’s experience those mostly showed up after January.

My state Dept. of Education puts together an annual scholarship compendium, perhaps there is one available in Connecticut, too. Ours contains information for national, state, and county sponsored scholarships, along with some private scholarships. This year’s issue was sent out several weeks ago.

I know that that claim gets bandied about, but it’s not really true. Most scholarships do not take race into consideration and really just reward high stats.

There are some schools that want more URMs and give great aid, so maybe focus on some of them.

What is your intended major and career goal?

Is your family low income? middle income? high income?

how much will they pay each year for college?

Do you have a non-custodial parent

When someone tells you that, be sure to whip out a pen and paper and ask for the exact ones you can apply for. Scholarship hunting is very time consuming business and applying even more so. So pin them down and find out if they are for real or just blowing smoke. When they are for real, don’t let an opportunity to take note of the specific one pass you by.

Take care to see which ones are renewable for 4 years and which are just for freshman year. You need a 4 year financial plan for college.

Did you apply to schools that give merit for your stats or URM? Some deadlines are Nov, Dec for apps to be considered for merit.

There is an African-American forum under specialty admission topics in the college admission forum here on cc. There is a sticky thread that lists private scholarships directed at AA students. I suggest you look there.

Like others have posted, your best merit money is from colleges directly. However there are private scholarships to have dependent on your activities, major, or financial need (not all private scholarships are need based). Just remember that most of them are for just one year and at smaller amounts than what colleges award. Sometimes these private scholarships can close the funding gap for some students. My DD did not get much merit money from her college (it doesn’t give much to OOS). However engineering major, being Latina and her activities enabled her to win about $10k in private scholarships per year so far. She hustles for that money with essay writing and filling out the applications. She starts the process in Dec and it usually runs through March. Some private scholarships like the Jack Kent Cooke are due very soon. I don’t know about the Ron Brown scholarship which is directed at AA students. Also look at the united negro college website for other listings. You basically have to do searches to find them.

Good luck.
