Where can you secure your valuables in your dorm room?

I want to put my electronics in a place where they can't be stolen. I'm pretty sure my college doesn't allow a safe to be drilled to the floor, so will they provide maybe a locked cabinet that you can secure with a key?

Not sure, ask housing…and even if they do a lock can be picked…or just broken, the only thing you can really do is not bring anything to valuable that you can’t carry with you.

Most stealing occurs when you leave stuff out in view and present an opportunity for the thief to steal, like leaving your dorm room open, a friend’s friend(stranger to you) in your room sitting around, anytime you or your roommate aren’t present.
I put stuff out of sight, like in a slim laptop bag shoved under dirty laundry or locked in my collapsed luggage.
I put jewelry, $$ in a ziploc bag and shoved in my big box of laundry detergent.
Mostly don’t bring anything expensive or with sentimental value to college.

Bring a lockable storage trunk like they sell at Target, Walmart, etc that you lock with a padlock. Or buy one of those smaller combination lock safes. My D has a trunk that will hold other things as well, but can lock her computer, etc in there.

I had a lockable drawer in my dresser that the housing department provided.

Check if you have that maybe?

^^I had one of those trunks this past year. I don’t really plan to bring it back this year as i’m only going to be at my current college for a semester then transferring to another school so i’m not going to bring nearly as much stuff as I did last year.

Hide things whether you lock them or not. Do not leave cash laying around. Maybe invest in a small safe or other lockable box.

If housing doesn’t provide a lockable drawer, then I guess the only alternative is to purchase a chest, but couldn’t someone just pick the whole chest up and steal everything?

^i dont think that would happen very often…why would someone steal a locked chest without even knowing what’s in it? Besides, a chest would be super hard to carry out of a dorm room unnoticed by anyone…

Honestly, just don’t bring anything too valuable into a college dorm. You will never know what can happen!

It’s kind of impossible to avoid bringing a cell phone and laptop though.

I’d suggest getting a safe and some sort of elastic for a combination lock. I had a safe in my room, but didn’t use it as much after a while since neither my roommate nor his friends were thieves. I still didn’t leave anything valuable in plain sight however.

Out of sight, out of mind.

I just bought a trunk with two locks on it for my room. It’s big enough to store clothes and things, but I also plan on using it to stash away anything valuable (“valuable” for college anyway. I don’t plan on bringing anything expensive outside of my laptop).

And don’t leave valuables out in the open, period. I don’t plan on carrying much cash anyways, but I wouldn’t leave more than spare change out in plain sight. After my house was broken into last month by our freaking neighbors, I’m not taking any chances at college.

I have a cord that I can lock my laptop to my desk or other large object (like a bed) with. Not the most secure, but unless the thief wants to bring a desk and a laptop out, it should be ok.

Get a locked box, and keep it out of sight as much as possible. But the best theft prevention in dorms is to keep valuables out of sight or at home.
