Where could I get admitted with these stats?

Hey guys.

I graduated this June from High School, however, I participated in something called Running Start in my senior year and right now I'm a sophomore with 55 quarter credits/about 36 semester credits from a community college in WA. My current cumulative GPA is a 3.67 and I'm majoring in Political Science and Economics.

Where could I get in with this GPA? I did get invited to Phi Theta Kappa and they seem to offer some scholarships for some universities, however, I didn't pay the membership fee yet.

I was going to apply to the University of Washington in Seattle for Winter quarter 2012 but I'm currently unsure because I would graduate with my AA degree next year and if I transfer without it I'll most likely have some packed Intro classes at the university.

Also, has anyone any experience with Canadian universities? I'm kind of interested in UBC - University of British Columbia - and that university would cost about the same as an OOS uni, actually a bit less.

Canada would be interesting for me because I want to get both an MBA and a J.D. degree (double degree) and the job market for lawyers is a lot better in Canada than it is here.

Anyways - what are some universities that I'd have a shot at?

You can probably get into about 95% of the colleges in North America. Bear in mind that outside of the public university system in WA, your dual enrollment credits may not transfer. My Ds both earned 30-40 hours of university credit while in HS, but went to a private university where they weren’t accepted. You’ll want to check with the Registrar’s Offices at each of the colleges you investigate.

I currently only have my phone with me so I can’t send you the link - but I just went over the scholarship offerings of PTK and I actually saw some Ivies on the list. Now, PTK is a Honor Society for 2-Year colleges so I don’t think they’ve made a mistake…

Do you think I’d actually might have a shot at getting into an Ivy? My GPA right now will go up after Fall quarter, I’m certain. I’m pretty sure that I’ll graduate with a 3.8 or 3.9 GPA…

I don’t know. Should I submit my App. for UW for Winter 12? Or, should I stay at my community college and try to get into Cornell or UPenn?

That sounds so crazy, in a way.

I’d aim high :). I think you can get in to many top ranked colleges. But be sure to research which schools meet full-need and don’t waste time applying to schools that are unlikely to offer you much FA. Look at which schools will accept your credits also, but keep in mind that it may be ok with you to lose some credits if you are accepted to say, Cornell, and get a great FA package. Aim high, but apply to some financial safeties too.

I think I’ll lose some credits one way or another unless I’ll stay in WA, but I’m open to moving to another state as well.

I’ll see what I’ll do but I think even with FA Cornell or another Ivy would be too expensive. I want to go to grad school as well so saving up some money for myself and my parents would be pretty helpful. Thanks for the encouragement! (:

Here’s the list of universities that offer scholarships for PTK members:

I looked into some older threats in the FA discussion board, and it seems like Mississippi State University seems like something that could be for me… I’ve never really considered the South before but their scholarships are pretty generous:

That’d save me a lot of possible debt because of grad school… and it’d make it possible for my brother to go to a top Engineering program.

I’m gonna look for some more great deals like this one but I think I might just have found my match - even though they’re lower ranked than UW.

Is that 3.67 a HS GPA? What about your SAT/ACT scores? What can your family afford for school?

No, it’s my current community college GPA.

I’m not sure about my SAT scores because it’s been over a year since I took them… I could look it up but as far as I know colleges don’t care about them anymore when you have completed over 45 credits/30 semester hours. I’ll have 65 credits (quarter) after Fall quarter.

My parents would be willing to pay for the cost of UW for the two years that I’d go there (about $30/year) - if I should go there. They want to support me with grad. school but I honestly want to pay as much as I can with scholarships because I also have a brother who wants to go to college.

My D is at Mississippi State and we were very pleased with Aid offers…and the school in general.

However, it could be a bit of a culture shock for you. She grew up in the south so it has been fine for her, but I grew up eastern mid-west and the move to the south was an adjustment for me. I would make a during the week visit if at all possible before applying.

Many schools require your HS info even for a transfer. For instance, U Washington http://www.washington.edu/admin/factbook/common_data_set_2009.pdf</a> states all transfers need to send their HS transcript and some their standardized test scores (section D).

Thank you! I’ll check it out!

Erin’s Dad - I’m aware of that. From my understanding, however, they look more at the college gpa though and more on the essay if you have completed over 45 quarter credits.
At least that’s what my advisor at the school told me. :)

I probably won’t apply for Winter… I’m not sure but I’m just really torn right now. I feel like I should consider more schools and I don’t know what school could be a great fit for me and which would have a great Econ program.

Do you have any idea which school would be a match for me?
