Cool, thanks for posting the info. I see Mich there a lot.

It’s too bad that so many in the current cast have other commitments and are unable to make the transfer to NY. They are spectacular!

What does * mean?

I think the * just indicates “principal.” I copied the names from the article listing the cast.

Really interesting! Thanks for posting. Not only does it show that Tisch and Michigan grads are producing great talent that are getting hired, it also shows smaller, lesser-known programs are also producing good talent. Proof positive you can get to Broadway many different ways!

Charlotte Maltby (Cosette) is currently a junior at Michigan. She is leaving school (leave of absence) at the end of this semester.

The * means the person is a member of Actors’ Equity Association, the professional union for actors (and stage managers). Playbills in the US list AEA (aka “Equity”) members with an * after their names, so I’m assuming an official cast list like ManVan copied uses the same convention.

I don’t know, maMTma, since this is a cast list for a huge revival, it doesn’t seem likely that most of these other actors are not members of AEA. I’m sure most of them have been in other Broadway shows, or have done Equity work elsewhere.

I know that some of the ensemble performers are long-time Les Mis tour veterans (like Max Quinlan who has been Marius on tour.) Some were picked up in Toronto. Some were cast (I think) to add a bit of “star-power” to the line-up and Charlotte Maltsby was just a straight audition success-story (kind-of.)

I’m excited. I never get tired of this show.

I agree, CollegeSearchDad, that it’s unlikely all of those other actors are non-Equity, and I notice now that Kyle Scatliffe’s name isn’t asterisked but Enjolras is considered a principal role…not sure why the asterisks, then!

The asterisks used in the original post cannot be to indicate if the actor is a member of AEA. As a quick example, Emily Cramer is a former classmate at Tisch with my daughter and has been in another Broadway show. My D knows Andrew Kober and he also has been in Broadway shows and is thus a member of AEA already.

maybe new cast members?

I would redact the asterisks if I could…

The asterisks really are not the point anyway. :D

By the way, the asterisks are NOT the newest cast members. Some of the leads were named a while ago. If anything, it is some of the ensemble that is very recently named.

No, all of these actors, with possibly the exception of the UMich student, are already Equity members.

Picked up? :)

The UMich student is already Equity. She played Fantine in Les Mis at The Muny.

As I went back and looked…

The * indicated previously announced cast members.

Also,

In ManVan lingo “picked-up” means “cast.”
