Waitlisted at Stanford. Got into GTech. But put into Liberal Arts at UTAustin instead of engineering/arch? That was my top match school and I wanted to go there and that was the only college I visited and I was so enthusiastic...!@#$%^&*

And then I got this letter a week into march saying they didn't receive an essay that I did indeed complete. Even though I wrote a new one and sent it and they said everything was good and dandy, they still put me in Liberal Arts which is not where I want to be. That was the only school I wanted to go smoothly, I didn't care whether I got into the tougher ones, I at least wanted to go there. And it got screwed.

I did think I might get into Cornell, but apparently this year's the worst for applying to tough schools. Sucks for us.

By the way, if anyone wants to help me out with how I should appeal to UT (maybe using the facts of where I got in and stuff), I'd greatly appreciate it. Just look under the UT forum for my user name, construction. Thanks and congrats to you all.

Computeruzer... sorry about your disappointment. What were your SAT 1 scores? I'm guessing that might help explain it as you didn't list them as accomplishments.

I was accepted to Columbia University (where I was told it was an 8% acceptance rate this year)... and was wait listed at Brandeis and Emory. I had NO connections to getting in Columbia either (legacy, sports recruitment, etc.)

Wahoowa, i'm confused, were you serious? It's not possible to "give" someone my waitlist spot if they were rejected. Plus, i'm counting my waitlist as a rejection anyway, i think it's highly unlikely that i'll get picked from it.

someone i know had double legacy at cornell and really really good scores/recs/awards/ECs and got waitlisted. he got into some other good schools, including duke and dartmouth.

Daughter got rejected at Davidson BUT had a fellow classmate wait listed. This classmate was caught cheating during a test by 3 witnesses (passing cheat notes back and forth with another student) PLUS she showed up drunk at a school function. Both events occurred in tenth grade. Davidson has a reputation for a very strict honor code. The incoming freshmen even sign a contract attesting to honor it. This all makes no sense to me. Do they even read the applications?

Princeton, hands down. I made the classic "I am applying to Harvard College" mistake in an e-mail to them for updating my info. In fact, I'm near-positive that was the reason for my rejection.

Also, the waitlist at Columbia was a huge "***" since I not only lived 30 minutes away, but I also had a notable alumnus write a supplementary recommendation about me.

It's like a highly mutated case of Tufts Syndrome, considering I ended up enrolling at the big H.

"Hey guys, hang in there! You are all great candidates elsewhere. Besides, it appears that most of us applied to a numerous amount of schools. I mean, some schools had nearly 40 THOUSAND students apply!"

The numbers are actually even higher. This can be seen by checking out this table listing the number of applications to the UC system:

where it shows that over 55,000 freshmen applied to UCLA--and over 47,000 also applied to each of the following three campuses: UC Berkeley, UC San Diego and UC Santa Barbara.

I got into Northwestern, Johns Hopkins, and honors engineering at the University of Texas but got waitlisted at Vanderbilt, my #1, where I have two generations of legacy.

What are the chances of getting into a school off of a waitlist?
