Where Do I Stand Now?

cptofthehouse, that’s a great way to look at it! I’ll definitely look into using Naviance as a means of helping me select colleges to apply to.

mom2collegekids, let’s imagine money wasn’t an issue at all- what schools would you suggest I apply to that I could reasonably get accepted into? What would be some matches, reaches, and safeties that I should consider?

Unless you know FOR SURE that money isn’t an issue and that your parents will pay $60k+ per year, then it’s silly to play that game. There would be no point in us mentioning literally hundreds of schools that would not work out for you.

You can’t apply to an infinite number of schools. …maybe 15 or so at most. Your list and strategy has to include some kind of understanding of what your financial situation is.

For instance, if you were to tell us that your family earns $100k per year, but can only pay $10k per year, then we would be suggesting a very different list than if your family earns $250k and will pay for any school.

Since it sounds like you don’t know how much your parents will pay, ask them right now. If your parents are divorced, that will be another issue since some schools will expect a contribution from all parents.

What is your situation? Are you lowish income (under $50k) …middle income ($50k - 85k)…upper middle (86k - 150k)?.. upper income (over $150k)???

Ask your parents.

(P.S…Naviance is only a tool that will suggest schools that might accept you. It will NOT let you know if a school is affordable at all.)

I’ve only slightly considered engineering as it has never really been very interesting to me. But then again, I’m only a junior in high school, so what do I know about professional careers? I’ll look into it and see if it’s something I could see myself doing for the rest of my life. How do you think grad schools would feel about biomedical or genetic engineering?

How do you think grad schools would feel about biomedical or genetic engineering?

My honest opinion is that those eng’g disciplines are very limiting. The same grad schools would accept a variety of eng’g disciplines that have more flexibility…such as ChemE, MechE, EE, etc. My son is ChemE and he’s going to med school in August, so he had the flexibility of med school or working in his field.

That sounds pretty interesting, thank you for your input and I’ll make sure to consider everything you’ve suggested!
