ok, i'm starting to think about what schools i should apply to (saftey, match, and reach), so where do you think i stand with W&M

Great chance, but not as good as your chances at UVA, only because you said you have legacies there (I replied to your UVA one too). If you get in both and if UVA and W&M are your top two choices, then make your decision based on which campus you like better, and the intangibles like that. The education you'll get at either school is going to be of the same value in the real world.

As with reaches, if you get a 2100+, you could try to knock on Georgetown's, Emory's, and maybe Duke's doors. If you want to go to a private school, you can try Richmond (obscene price now), W&L, or maybe Vandy, Wake Forest, or Davidson. Just opening thoughts for you.

I say theres about a 95% chance your in. Any of the ivies as well as Duke, Notre Dame, perhaps Johns Hopkins would probably be good reaches for you.

I'd say you're a very strong candidate. Being in-state is definitely helpful, but because you're from Northern VA, it makes it just a little bit more tricky. Since so many people apply from NoVa, sometimes people get rejected while equally qualified students from the same region get in just because they don't want all of the school to come from the DC area.

You have a very good chance of getting accepted, though. Best of luck!

atr- she certainly looks like the perfect candidate!
I'm sure you know how competitive it is for girls, so there is no such thing as a "sure thing", but I'd say, if not your D, then who?
(But always have a back-up plan!).
Good luck to her!

atr, I'd say pretty good chance. Obviously she'll have to have a strong writing part of her application too, but she looks like a very good candidate.

hopefully she'll continue with music at college

yup, we do. Very small time commitment compared to high school marching band. We (i'm in it, former HS drum major) play for football and basketball games. We also do a soccer game or two usually. Practice once a week in the fall for an hour in addition to games, and a couple practices at the beginning of spring semester, but if you have a conflict you don't need to be there. Sometimes we get together for social events also.
