I'm not really sure what type of shot I have at schools. I'm probably looking into some business majoring, so I wanted to know if you guys could suggest some schools.

Nevada Resident

GPA: 3.862
Weighted GPA: 4.262
Class rank: 9/657

SATs/ACTs not taken yet

I've taken all honors classes possible throughout my freshman and sophomore year.

My junior schedule this year is:

AP Bio
AP English
APUSH
Japanese 3-4

I think my weakness is probably my ECs.

Girl's Basketball - 2 yrs, maybe 3 this year
FBLA - 2 yrs (officer position next year possibly)
Key Club - 2 yrs
Marching Band Drumline - 1 yr
Volunteering hrs - 50+ (my goal is probably getting it to at least 150 by my senior year)
Academic Olympics - this year will be my first year in it

So what kind of schools do I have a shot at?

Nobody can really judge your standings without knowing your test scores… Your rank and GPA is indeed excellent though. I would say you will have a decent shot at many top public schools.

Can you narrow down which parts of the country where you would prefer to look or where you would not look? Is very rural or very urban out of the question? Do you want the big-school experience or the small-school experience? Do you need FA or merit aid to attend a private or OOS public college?

Without narrowing the field, it’s hard to answer. There are hundreds of colleges and universities with good business programs that you could be looking at.

In the 1800-2000 range, you can probably count on some of the schools around rank 20-40 in USNews as your possible “matches” (totally arbitrary figure on that, so don’t shoot me if you disagree). If you can bring it up higher to, like, 2000-2200, you’d have a better shot at some of the higher ranked ones.

I’d definitely prefer schools in the west, but I’m trying to keep UCs as a lower priority since it’s so costly for OOS. East would be okay too.

I’m looking at public and privates, also FA would probably be one of the things I’m looking for.

If you can get an SAT score in the range of 2200 or above, you will probably be looking at some nice merit aid offers from the private colleges which offer them.

If you need merit money, the trick is to seek out colleges that offer merit aid, but also where your stats put you at the top of the applicant pool. Ivies do not pay merit money and you will not be at the top of their applicant pool. There’s a thread at the top of the Parent’s Forum that’s called Good Schools for Merit Aid and you should read through. Chapman, by the way, is a very good suggestion; you should look into it.
