If you live in a single room, where do you keep things like groceries, cooking utensils, laundry detergent, etc?

Living space is limited, so you need to make the best out of what space you do have. Loft your bed up so you can keep plastic storage containers underneath with all the essentials.

I store stuff in and on top of my wardrobe, and under my bed. My dorm has "loftable" beds, meaning it's essentially a bunk bed set up for each bed, but only one bed on it. This means we have extra space under the beds for storage, even without lofting it. You can invest in bed risers if you want to raise your bed enough to fit storage containers under it but don't want it lofted. I really reccomend getting some of those stackable plastic crates; they're great for storage of laundry detergent and all that other stuff, and at least here they fit on the floor of my wardrobe/closet thing

In the closet . . . be smart when heading to college and realize that room is limited, do not pack all your possessions but only that which you will need.

In the closet... to have more hanging space, I went to the container store and got a hang-able second closet rod. (it hangs off the first closet rod so you get double the hanging space without having to drill holes)

also nice are the hanging shelf things for your closet made out of fabric. You can put lots of stuff in those (or a hanging shoe rack on the back that you can put ANYTHING in...I put in hairbrush, contact solution, etc.)

If you can, loft your bed - then you can store lots of stuff under it.

would it be wise to bring a bookshelf, even a small one?

I wouldn't plan on bringing any furniture-like items (such as bookshelves) until you know where in your room to put it.
