Where do you store stuff over the summer?

S has tv, furniture etc that he will need to store over the summer - just thinking ahead. I know many college towns have services where they pick your things up at your dorm and then deliver them in the fall.

If your son is living off campus, he can likely just store his stuff in that house until he moves in. Otherwise it depends on your price range. There are services like BoxMyDorm which will do everything for you but which cost an arm and a leg. More popular are options like Public Storage (there’s a storage place at around 67th and Market). You would need to borrow or rent a car, but that’s always an option. Cheap too.

I highly recommend the storage place at 55th and Sansom. (or any of the standard storage places around the area) Lots of people rent out space in their off-campus houses, or in frat houses, but those can be huge theft targets.

Oh god, don’t do BoxMyDorm unless you want to bleed money. Everyone I know stays away from it, haha. I also throw my vote in with mattwonder’s recommendation.

This is a kind of old post, but I’m putting my two cents in anyway:

DO NOT!!! DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT! use BoxMyDorm or PennMoveout. You will HEMORRHAGE money and then be all ****ed off.

1: It is SUPER expensive. I keep getting hit up with fees!
2: I tried to save money by using my own boxes (which I weighed before sending them off…they were under the limit) and still got charged overweight fees! ***? I’ll chalk it up to them having a more sensitive scale, but I’m not fully buying it.
3. You are bound do have weird stuff that doesn’t fit in boxes but then you’ll have to pay EVEN MORE for it
4. PennMoveout’s website is one of the worst interfaces I have EVER seen. It’s caused me to rack up extra charges on my credit cards which I am in the process of disputing now.

Stay away!!!

My d used BoxMyDorm her freshman year and YES it was expensive but it was a good option for her - we lived overseas and she did not have access to a car or a drivers license to drive herself. She ordered the boxes, packed them and arranged pickup then she flew away for the summer. When she returned to her new place the boxes were in her room waiting for her.
This year she had a 3 week gap between apartments - the move involved:
Finding a place to store her things - a friends basement
Copying friends key so she could retrieve things in June when subletters were there
Finding boxes
Packing
Borrowing a car
Finding a friend to drive the car
Parking the car illegally in two places while making multiple trips
Carrying all her stuff down 4 flights, into car, then into house basement
Having her mom drive from MI to PA to help her move in
MOM having to park and help her find all her stuff in the huge pile of stored items in the basement then carry it up stairs, load, move, more stairs…

Makes Box my Dorm look like a great option!

Be prepared to do the same thing for other summers.
