Where do you think I could go?

I just got deferred from University of Georgia, which is making me feel really, really stupid... but here are some stats:

Gender: Female
Ethnicity: Asian
Location: Georgia

GPA: 3.4 UW (about a 90%)

SAT: Reading: 800; Math: 550; Writing: 750 ((2100 or 1350))

Rank: Top 30% (about 200 out of 600)

APs: Language (5), Psychology (5), World History (4) and currently taking: AP Biology, AP French, AP Government and Economics and AP Literature

Classes: Mostly Gifted and Honors, with 2 Regular classes (both math)

Extracurricular: Orchestra (4 years- but 10 years in total), Art Club (3 years), Philosophy Club (3 years) Writing Club (3 years- President for 2 years), Varsity Tennis (1 year)

Work: Volunteering at soup kitchen (approx. 120 hours), SAT prep school secretary (1 summer), currently tutoring English to children

I think that's about it...
I'm going to reapply to UGA, but I've also applied to University of Maryland.
I'm probably going to apply to Georgia State, Georgia Tech and Emory University, but mostly because they are in state.
I might apply to Duke University, just because I want to take that chance.

I'm absolutely an average, unimpressive student... but I want to apply to these places anyway...

What are my chances??

I think you absolutely will get into UGA for reg. decision. Am very shocked you didn't get EA w/ that 800 CR score! Your SAT is very good; retake and get your math to 600. Your 90% is the same as my son's, but his GPA was a smidge higher. I think the EA's were haphazard; especially when you consider your minority status...fill out the other apps...but I'm betting it would be safe to buy red and black to decorate the dorm!

Cordova, I'm surprised also, but UGA has become tricky of late. I think you will get in RD also. I would look at Florida State, Virginia Tech, Indiana University and I also think you should try Tulane. You are in the first 3 and I wouldn't be surprised if you got into Tulane. Best of luck!

Thanks everyone so much for replying!
Yes, UGA has become really strange in its acceptances- everything depends on GPA and pretty much nothing else. And then it's mostly due to chance if you get accepted or not.
So do you guys think that Emory would be too much of a reach?

I think it would be worth a shot. The essay may be the key. Good luck!

You aren't getting into Emory with a 550 SAT Math score--sorry.

Look, instead of looking at tougher places to get into than Georgia, such as Emory or Maryland, you should be looking at easier places. (You did get deferred--right?).

Retaking the SAT to boost the math score is the right course to take. Also, I agree with some of the schools on poi's list--such as Virginia Tech and Indiana--and with your decision to apply to Georgia State and to still pursue Georgia after improving your SAT math score.

Florida State is worth applying to, but is iffy (slight reach).

Apply to Duke??????--Do you not understand that Duke is twice as difficult to get into as Georgia?

Look, I'm guessing you want to be a journalism major--meaning you should consider a school like Missouri at Columbia plus Indiana at Bloomington (already mentioned) plus Kansas plus Miami (Florida) plus Susquahanna University. These are all schools where you have chances. Georgia is also excellent for journalism--so work on that SAT test now.

Good luck.

Bump...!

Actually, no, I don't want to be a journalist.
I am probably, most likely, NOT going to apply to Duke... but it was just one of those dream schools.. you know?

I still have absolutely NO idea where I really want to go.
If anyone could help with some suggestions..
If it helps, I'm a really liberal, left- wing type of person. What kind of colleges fit me with my personality and my scores?

Thanks in advance!

Also look at Rutgers New Brunswick (main campus), Drew (NJ), University of Vermont, Ursinus (PA), Beloit (WI) and Ohio Wesleyan.

A liberal south of the Mason Dixon?? Cross off Indiana it conservative. And take a long good look at Tulane.

Haha, yes, I'm a liberal. But I'm originally from Maryland, which is why I applied to Maryland, College Park.
Tulane is okay, but I never really put too much thought into it.

As far as US News rankings go, how far up and below should I consider applying? Between 50 and 70 maybe? That's not narrowing down too much but like I said, I'm lost.

apply to Michigan, you probably won't get in OOS but you never know.
