Hi, i live in wisconsin and am trying to get into the best college i can. My low GPA is mostly because of spanish, math, and science. I am very good at history and literature.
When I graduate I will have:
Volunteered at my humane society
Volunteered at my local republican party
played 4 years of football
1-2 years of baseball
Been a member of my campus ministry leadership team (I go to a Catholic High school)
Participated in international outreach
been a member of an organization called children of the fallen, a group that provides trust funds for children of fallen soldiers
Worked at 2 grocery stores.

So i would like to stay in the Midwest, but I'm open to other suggestions. I want to be a lawyer some day.

Do you have any advice on where i should apply?

GPA is probably too low for Madison. It may be high enough for Minnesota. What about Whitewater, Stevens Point, LaCrosse, Eau Claire, Winona, Mankato? Wisconsin residents pay instate tuition in Minnesota so there is good value there too. There are some good LAC’s in the region too that may be interested in admitting you.

i currently have a 24 ACT. im going to take that again since i got that without studying. and my parents have money saved up for my college, so theyre willing to help me. So what UW school other then madison would you say is the best?

I honestly wouldn’t bet on Madison…at least not yet. Get your ACT and GPA up and you’ll have a much stronger chance.

If you’re looking to stay in state, look into Eau Claire or La Crosse. It’s much easier to transfer into Madison from one of the UW System schools, so you can keep that as a backup option as well.

They’re fine schools, but you say that your parents have money saved. Do you know if they have $200k saved? These privates will cost about $200k to attend.

You’re parents may have that much saved However, sometimes when kids hear that their parents (or grandparents) have money saved, they find that not enough has been set aside. So, ask… It may be great news, or not. But, at least with that info, you can make the best decisions. :)

If your parents have no issues with paying $200k for your education, then those schools are fine…Also, consider…UDayton and St. Louis Univ…but do try to get your scores up a bit. :)

Essentially, there are seven schools in Wisconsin that are considered good. (Each school has strengths in different areas.) I will list them in order of prestige. This list is slightly subjective since I am generating it, but it is pretty close to the general outlook. (I am basing this on my own experience/conversations and on USNWR rankings)

Madison (No arguments here, it’s simply the best)

Lawrence/Marquette (Probably the two next best schools, very different places so I will just call them equal)

Beloit/La Crosse

Eau Claire

Milwaukee

Now comes the tough part. Your chances.

Madison: As you stand (24 ACT and 3.3 GPA) you won’t get in.

Lawrence/Marquette: Very, very, very slight chance of getting in.

Beloit/La Crosse: 70/30ish (odds against you, better chance at Beloit than La Crosse)

Eau Claire: 60/40 (odds against you)

Milwaukee: 80/20 (odds in your favor)

The solution: You really need to bring either your GPA up or improve your ACT score.

As far as the UW schools go, Eau Claire (Ranked 29 out of about 150 schools) and La Crosse (Ranked 17 out of about 150 schools) are excellent places and they both are getting harder to get into. They are the “alternative” schools to Madison as they offer a small class environment and solid academics without the private liberal arts price tag. If you can at all avoid it, do not go to any other UW school.

Disagree with WisconsinMan regarding Eau Claire. If you are in the top quarter of your graduating class (rank) with that 3.2 (Unweighted?) and a 24 ACT, you are better than 80% chance of admissions. Very good choice.

And I’ll update your chances with a 3.2 and top quarter of your class (or if you get that GPA north of 3.25) that your chance of admission is 90%. With the ECs I’d bet on better than that.
