where do you want to live?

i think i'm either going to send in my deposit for birnkrant or fluor

have you visited? which one do you think has the prettiest view of campus?

(lol, yes my priorities are in the right place)

I highly highly recommend New/North if you are social-type person. It's typically the most popular choice. If you can't get in there, Birnkrant is good too. And on your deposit you specific your first/second/third choice/fourth choice. Since you will send your deposit in early, you should get your first choice.

i've visted fluor and the suite is very tempting. i really don't want to have to share one bathroom with an entire floor of guys. i also like its proximity to the lyon center. i'm very active and i plan on working out at least every other day. i'm trying to stay away from new/north because i'm a mechanical engineering student and i don't want too many distractions. everyone i've spoken to recommends birnkrant. i also like that it's so close to the library.

Gotta say, my S is a very happy freshman in the Great Outdoors Floor of Pardee. One plus is that there are built-in safes in every closet--one per student. It is conveniently located & quieter tahn New, North, Birhkant but not as quiet as honor's dorms. He's an engineering student & there are kids in all fields in his dorm; his room mate is an English major.

Point taken, but it's more like a hallway rather than a floor. :)

True, they do have LONG hallways, but my S does seem quite happy there. Do you have housing suggestions SFGiants?

i dont really have a choice, i'm pretty sure that RHP kiddos have to live in marks hall. sounds cool tho.

honestly, its a room- hopefully its not the place where i'll be spending most of my time while at SC, so as long as the mattress isnt too awful i'm happy

My S has a friend who lives in the honor's dorms. He's fine with it, but bring a BIG & GOOD fan because it gets hot. He was thinking of returning for sophomore year but decided to branch out & try for an apartment.

Try to get- New, North (social) Birnkrant (mix of social/quiet)

Stay away from- Trojan Hall.

Everything else is pretty much inbetween.

Trojan Hall is VERY cramped. Tiny rooms with low ceilings. I felt like it was a prison when I first went in there.

Birnkrant is mix of social/quiet and rooms are good sizes.

Agree with uyulove.

fluor tower for sure

Really? I've been in Trojan Hall rooms, and they're not that small. Marks Tower rooms are super cramped though.

Trojan Hall laundry room = instant asphyxiation.

Oh, Birnkrant has the slowest elevators ever. Which sucks if you live on one of the top floors like me.

Pardee's a good choice.

what about the radisson?

oh and what the heck is a "deans hall"? it says in my scholarship letter that I may be eligible to live there, but I can't figure out if it's just a hall in a dorm, or a separate dorm for the scholarship kids.

I'm pretty sure it's just a hall in a dorm, or else there wouldn't be a Facebook group called "I Lived in Trojan Hall but Ain't in No Honors College." :)

The "deans halls" are Trojan Hall & Marks Hall are supposedly for merit scholars only, but actually house other students as space is available.

^And as nerdy as this sounds...I'm actually kind of excited about that. I plan to put Marks or Trojan as my first choice. I like to have fun, but my closest friends are definitely academically serious, so I think socially it would be a good fit.

Probably I'll put Marks down...

I know Parkside/Birnkrant have music practice rooms - ? Does Marks?

Marks hall has two common areas and a library downstairs. People tend to practice music in all three. Also, the common areas each have a piano (although I won't promise anything about them being in tune!).

lol The Marks Hall piano is pretty out of tune, I have to say.

I'd recommend Birnkrant (good mix of social + academic, right next to Leavey and TroGro), or New/North if you're really social and you don't study in your room... maybe even Marks Hall if you just want to live in a Dean's Hall.

There are merit scholars and TO/FSH/BacMD kids in all buildings, on every floor, so to be honest, non-Dean's Halls can be pretty academic too (well, not New/North so much)... For example, on my floor alone, there are 8+ scholarship people, and most of us in TO or FSH.

Some people prefer co-ed floors while some want gender-separated floors, so be sure to look into that as well (Pardee, Marks Tower, and the Dean's Halls have separate floors for guys and girls, but Birnkrant and New/North have co-ed floors).

Just stay away from Trojan Hall... not in a good location (right next to the street, and you can hear cars zooming by at all hours), tiny rooms, etc... the rest of the dorms aren't too bad.
