Where do your parents stay when visiting UNH?

HI! My D is accepted and we are going to do the accepted students day. We loved the school the day we visited but now we have to learn more.

Where do parents stay when visiting their UNH students, if they are out of staters? Any recommendations for clean but inexpensive motels etc in Durham? Thank you!

When we went to visit UNH we stayed at the Holiday Inn Express. Not expensive ($100 or so) and it included continental breakfast. If was fine, clean and fairly new. It is right down the street from the campus and easy walking distance.

Thank you!

I found them via tripadvisor after I posted – I bet they get pretty crowded at graduation, parents weekend, etc!

How did you feel about the school? Is your D going there?

Oops, I meant your child?

When searching remember that Portsmouth is close by and is a wonderful coastal town.

JRZMom–Did you already attend Accepted Students Day? My youngest son is heading to UNH as well for Accepted Students Day for COLA. I also have a sophomore who attends UNH as well…started as a WISBE student, but transferred to political science and justice studies at the end of freshman year. He loves UNH. I could try to answer any general questions you may have.

No, we are going on Apr 15. We had to do other schools earlier, & a family obligation.

Also I was hoping that in order to give UNH its brightest glow, we would aim for a weekend less likely to be having a snow/wintry mix, etc event. My oldest lives in Acton MA and I have been hearing she is very tired of winter! ; – ) So are we…

I know there will be plenty of winter there but the mud & sleet portion of early spring is just depressing & doesn’t show a school in its best light.

I don’t think my daughter applied for honors classes—should she have? If she gets there & realizes she’d like to take honors, esp in her major, is it difficult to get in?

When we visited, we did not take a tour from the AO—we used one of those leaflets they give out, and walked around. I’m hoping they’ll do a tour on the acccepted student day.

Thanks for the input!

I don’t know how difficult it is to get into honors classes but I do know several students who were invited into honors programs after their first year; so it should not be a problem for your daughter if she is not challenged by first year courses. She will pick all her classes at orientation and get her schedule then if she chooses to attend. So you will have plenty of time to email UNH about this between your revisit and orientation. We have found UNH to be very friendly and helpful. Some classes are large and some not so much. Some professors are highly accessible and some have to be hounded; not that different from most medium to large universities. My son plays club hockey and joined a fraternity so he immediately made friends. My girlfriend’s son graduated from the engineering school at UNH this winter and is working. He has a different personallity than my son and loved the school as well. In fact, I don’t know many people who felt like the college was not a good fit after they enrolled. My youngest son is deciding between UNH and QU.
