when compared to Chapman, Santa Clara, University of San Diego, and Occidental? Basically in terms of who they offer admission, academic superiority, and reputation?

I think more prestigious than all of them

Even Occidental?

Pitzer’s admit rate is 20%, Oxy’s is 39%. It should be said that there are kids who would get into Oxy but not Pitzer, but also vice versa.

This is one of those interesting stats that redefines colleges. Pitzer always had the reputation of where you went if you were a decent student with poor scores (SAT optional). It also had a laid back vibe. When my son graduated HS in 07, he and several other slightly above average students were admitted, who would not have gotten into Occidental. Within just the past 2 years more and more students are applying and now that they have a low acceptance rate it is viewed as a prestigious school!

My daughter who is a senior now at Lewis & Clark College applied to Santa Clara University, Linfield College, Pacific University, University of Portland, St. Mary’s, Lewis & Clark College and Pitzer. She got into them all except Pitzer. Pitzer was her only rejection. Pitzer is a part of a very selective group of 5 colleges referred to as the Claremont Colleges. They include Pomona, Claremont-McKenna, Pitzer, Scripps and Harvey Mudd. I believe Pitzer is the least selective of the 5 but it is still very selective.

Technically Pitzer is the 3rd most selective Claremont College behind CMC and Pomona, which both have acceptance rates of 15.7%. It’s actually quite hard to compare across the 5C’s, because Scripps is a women’s college, and HMC is a math-science obsessed school, so both acceptance rates are counter-intuitively high.
wrist- even more impressive comparisons if you look a little further back: fewer than 9 years ago Pitzer had a 74% acceptance rate.

Pitzer has been rising really fast. Can’t explain why, nor do I really care, but I have noticed it. Occy pre-2007 was both more selective and admitted higher scoring students.

Occidental has been steady. Currently Pitzer’s students are slightly higher scorers on standardized tests, and the admit rate is slightly lower.

The real advantage of Pitzer over Occy is the co-location with Pomona, CMC and Mudd. I would expect that advantage to make Pitzer harder and harder to get into over time.

Right. Well, I don’t know how it is now, but when my son and I visited 2 1/2 years ago, it was acknowledged that Pitzer students were not considered to be part of the elite like the other 4 schools.

and remember, when test scores are optional, only those with good scores will submit them, thereby bringing up the average.

Pitzer: 580 - 690 CR, 580 - 680 M 22% acceptance rate

Occidental: 590 - 590 CR, 590 - 680 M 39% acceptance rate

This shows that there was probably a higher quality applicant pool at Occidental. Even though they have a much higher acceptance rate, I still think it is a more prestigious school and most people will agree.

Alright, thanks for all your replies. I have a couple questions how is Santa Clara’s business program, compared to big time universities, such as University of Miami. And between Pitzer and Oxy, which school has the better social sciences program, or more specifically poly sci department?

Depends where you want to live and work. Santa Clara has a good reputation within Silicon Valley and I know graduates have done well because of the extensive network the school has there.

In Miami area, I’m sure U of Miami has a leg up on Santa Clara.

Okay so basically it doesn’t neccessarily matter where you get your MBA, however, it’s all about your grades, and the internships offered at the school.

Where you get your MBA is very important in terms of jobs. Neither of the schools you ask about is a top national undergrad or grad business program but both have regional strengths.

Yeah that’s what I have heard, however, I don’t want to leave Cali. Anyways can somebody tell me which LAC has the better social sciences program, Oxy or Pitzer?

Do the Pitzer kids feel inferior to those at HM, CMC and Pomona then?

I remember reading some nasty stuff on CC boards a while back, 2 sets going back and forth and I was shocked! That they were not united.

Pitzer kids certainly don’t feel inferior to the other colleges. The 5C’s are quite different from each other, and most people understand that. Pitzer isn’t trying to be Pomona, CMC, HMC, or Scripps. and Pitzer kids themselves rarely perpetuate the 5C stereotypes either directly or indirectly. More acrimonious are certain CMC and Pomona weirdos who think life is a zero-sum game so they rag on each other endlessly.

I remember being sort of worried about this issue when I arrived at Pitzer a few years ago, but for me it turned out to be a complete non-issue. It DOES annoy me when people make negative judgments against Pitzer based on stereotypes that are literally years out of date.

Trojanman, I can personally vouch for Pitzer’s political studies program, which is very, very good, and for the polisci opportunities at the 5C’s total, which are OUTSTANDING.

My friends at HMC always talk trash about Pitzer. So does everybody else, apparently. I wonder why…

From what I´ve heard, Pitzer is considered the least rigorous of the 5 Claremont Colleges.
