After talking to an admissions representative and doing quite a bit of research, I'm very interested in Hillsdale. I love the emphasis on the Western tradition and faculty-student interactions. For those of you who applied to Hillsdale, what other schools of similar purpose/merit did you consider?

Hi Warrior,

My DS loves Hillsdale for some of the reasons that you stated. Other schools that he liked for similar reasons were Grove City College and Wheaton, though he ended up not applying to either of these two. He did apply to a few more schools for different reasons but HD has always been his #1.

Here’s the trend:
Students looking for similar religious and/or classical education tend to also look at Grove City, Wheaton, and Patrick Henry.
Students looking for similar prestige and/or rigor tend to also look at the Ivies–namely Dartmouth, Princeton, and Harvard.
Students who are simply from Michigan (or very familiar with it) tend to also look at Hope, Calvin, Alma, Kalamazoo, and UMich.
I did a little bit of all three. I ultimately applied only to Hillsdale. I hope this helps.

Really, it depends on your background, focus, and desire. Grove City is much like Hillsdale in many ways.

Do you want a school where the focus is on one particular religion? While the majority of students at Hillsdale are indeed religious, one branch of Christianity is not dominant. You’ll find Catholics, Evangelicals, Fundies, etc. At Grove City, the mix is primarily among fundie/evang protestants, though there are Catholic students there. At GCC, prayer circles might be more common than all nighters where the students “discuss” religion, politics, etc.

Brother is correct in his evaluation.
