Where else do I apply?

I made a previous post about this, and was referred to the list of schools by state. However, I would rather talk to people who have personally experienced being an MT major.
I’m really having trouble deciding where else I want to apply to because I cut my list down A LOT. I’m from CT, and I am looking for a BFA MT program that is relatively close (I’m applying to Ithaca, WestConn, Hofstra (accepted), NYU Tisch, Emerson, and UHart). I have found that I do not have a particular liking to schools that are right in NYC or schools that are conservatory-based. I have heard of schools like Manhattanville, Point Park, Muhlenberg, and Wesleyan University (CT). I would love to hear others input on those about the programs, student life, faculty, campus, admissions process, etc.

I understand some of those programs have a BA in Theatre rather than a BFA in Musical Theatre, so I’d appreciate it someone could give me the pros and cons to both, and which degree I would be most successful in long terms?

THANK YOU!!!

Hi @ skylarmt. I have a few suggestions for you.

  1. I think it still may be a good idea to look at the MT list by state and get a list from there. Then, you can look at each program and see which might fit your criteria.
  2. There is a Facebook group called "Courtney's Break Room." It has current students in various programs. Most of the people in this group are parents and it sounds like you are wanting a student perspective?
  3. At the end of the day, the program that is perfect for you is all about fit. As a parent of an MT/Acting prospective, this has been a huge journey for my daughter. What's interesting is that she can go to an audition day with a friend and one person will love the experience while the other feels like it just isn't the right fit. In the end, it's really about you and what you want from the program.
  4. In terms of a BA vs a BFA, there are lots of resources on this forum if you search that. Bottom line is that it's a good idea to look at the course offerings and how many credits and what types of courses are offered at each school.

Anyway, good luck to you!

Also, please use the search box at the bottom of this forum and search the names you are considering. I’m sure you can find some information and opinions. I know there is a lot here about Point Park. It’s a well respected program, heavy on dance. But conservatory and urban.

Lots on Muhlenberg too. Large program and strong on academics.

We are also from CT, and my D is a junior MT at Point Park. If you’d like a student persepctive, PM me and I will put you in touch with her.

Have you considered Wagner? It is technically in NYC but since it’s in Staten Island they have more of a campus feel and you aren’t right in the chaos of Manhattan. They offer a BA in theatre with strong musical theatre training. The application deadline may have passed but it’s worth a look!

I recently toured SUNY Geneseo; across the board, the faculty and students came across as friendly and motivated. I can’t give any specific feedback about its musical theater program, but I would recommend checking it out. It’s located in upstate NY, under five hours from WestConn.
