So, Im going to be a senoir next year and need some help picking out colleges.

My stats (I know i already posted them in the Denison fourm)
Top 50%
3.5
3 honors, 4 APs (two 4s on the those I have taken)
24 ACT (will retake and have already been studying daily for a score in the upper twenties)
First gen, low income family
middle eastern

ECS-Newspaper, Quill & Scroll society, mentor middle schools girls, french club, will probably join leadership and art club senoir year if that makes a difference
won awards for newspaper writing

In a college I am looking for the following things:
-A major in film studies or production-most important thing
-Small and isolated
-Mainly residential with a large sense of community
-Oppurtunies for career experience and interships

Where I'm already considering:
Denison-reach, but i'm convinced i'd rather go there than anywhere else
College of Wooster-safety, will do a "self-designed" major in film studies if I go there
Ohio U-safety-don't really want to go there because it's such a popular choice for people at my highschool and i'd rather not be with a bunch of people I went to high school with. But I've heard their video productions program is quite strong

My question is what other schools should I be considering for the major that I want? Are there any out of state schools I should look into where I have a reasonable chance of acceptance?

If you want to go into the NY, check Ithaca. BTW, I think it is a match school. Bigger than your other schools, but is good for the major that you are seeking.

Do you think College of Wooster is a safety? I would have thought that it is a match school for you.

I looked at Ithaca and I was suprised to see that it’s cheaper than Wooster. I’ll most likely visit Wooster soon and ask about their film department. I have thought of going there or someplace like OU and then transfering someplace in California.

I have looked in to USC and NYU but the application process has a lot of requirments and things to submit and I haven’t really had much serious experience. Though, Loyola Marymount has crossed my mind since they just require an essay for the school of film.

Agree with NEMom that Wooster looks more like a match, as does Ohio U (though if you get the ACT up that will help). It looks like you’re in OH. Have you looked at some of the smaller state schools that have film majors (like Wright State)? Those are probably more like safeties for you.

As far as Ithaca, they are not known for great financial aid, but the “Park School” seems to have a lot money to offer students in merit aid. Also, if you are from OH, I think that geographic diversity could help with your package. Just don’t count on it, bc you never really know.

I hope that someone else can answer. I am sorry, but I am just not familiar with that school, although I have heard of it. That doesn’t make the school bad or good, I hope that you understand that. I live in the northeast, so I am just not familiar and don’t want to give you the wrong information.

BTW, just curious, does Otterbein have your major, if you are in OH? I think that they offer a strong theatre program, but have no idea about film.

I looked up stats for BW and Otterbein and both still look like solid match schools for you, with Otterbein having very slightly lower average stats. I guess you should check out the percentage of students that they accept to see if they are low match schools. Also, I think that I read that one of them (at least one) is a rolling school. LOL, I already forgot which one it was. If you apply early and they have a quick turn around (you can inquire) you’ll know that you are in early in the process.

Okay, I have 2 more thoughts. You might want to see what UNC Wilmington has to offer if you are willing to go to NC, or Chapman U. if you want to go to CA. Oh, and you might want to look into Emerson College in MA.

Here’s my question: when you say “film studies” what do you want to do? Act? Production? Write? All of these careers can fall under film studies - in other words, you may be able to pick a more detailed major and then have more school options.

I’m in Ohio too and asked recently about B-W on this forum for my son - maybe someone will answer here!

northeastmom, I checked out Wilmington, I hadn’t considered it before, thanks. I like the Carolinas, I know the uni of south carolina has a nice film program as well with some creditable alumi. I’ve noticed Chapman and Emerson, both of which have really nice programs, but I’m unsure of how likely I could get accepted into them.

abasket, ideally I would like to work as a screenwriter or be an art or creative directer for a production company (i would probably minor in commucations.)
