Objectively speaking, pple in my country suffers from narrow fixation with HYPS and MIT. Not even Ivies such as Cornell, Dartmouth and Brown are spared the "what's that?". UCLA usually gets the "Isn't that the one near Berkeley?"

So, how is UCLA regarded in your country?.....Objectively speaking......

It's regarded very well academically, athletically... and so on!

You can look up college rankings (or even sports rankings if you feel like it) and graduate school rankings to get a rough idea of how prestigious people regard UCLA.

Yes, many will undoubtedly consider UCLA to be a very good school, but will anyone (or any country) consider UCLA as a 'WOW', ie. parents and relatives will be boasting of your achieving for years to come.

I just realise that if you're from CA, then the admission may seem more common, but if you're OOS or international, then admission prestige goes up quite a bit. Other prespective to consider may be MS or PhD and departments.

Even in California, getting into and graduating from UCLA is a very big deal and i've yet to meet a prospective employer that wasn't impressed by it.

I could be remembering this wrong, but here goes:

Someone on these forums drew a distinction between reputation and recognition. His/her argument was that a school like Berkeley has *reputation/I, whereas a school like UCLA has *recognition/I. People around the country tend not to WOW about UCLA, but there are some places where UCLA is considered very prestigious. At my school in southern California, for example, it's a big deal when someone gets into UCLA. One college-bound student told me repeatedly (in an argumentative tone, even) that UCLA is much more prestigious than Berkeley, everywhere. I think this idea is due to the fact that I'm in southern Cali, where UCLA is reputable. In other countries like China, I've heard, UCLA is much more prestigious than it is in the US.

I don't remember where I read this, but it's been tested that the UCLA logo is the most recognized college logo throughout the world. It may not be Princeton or Harvard, but when I went to Thailand and I told all of my like relatives (I was at a funeral so it was a good over couple hundred people) that I was attending UCLA every one of them knew what I was talking about. With some I even said, "Why are you guys making a big deal of it? It's not like I'm going to Princeton" and they were like, "Who's Princeton?"

Kyledavid,
Perhaps I'm thinking of a different quote, but the one that (even as a Bruin) I thought rather compelling was the comment "choosing UCLA is a lifestyle choice and choosing Cal is a life choice." Whether there's any truth to it, I thought it a great quote.

To the OP -- I've only lived in Western Europe, and in England, I felt there was more name recognition with University of California at Los Angeles (more that than the shortened "UCLA"), but in France, it was pretty equal in comparing the two. Both countries had heard of Harvard and to a lesser extent, Yale, not really any others on the east coast.

I've now lived in Japan and Korea, and I get the occasional wow here and there. Overall, it's not like I'm saying Harvard or MIT, but most people are fairly impressed.

In Japan, it seems that the older generations recognize Berkeley while the younger generations recognize UCLA. The younger generations seem to prefer UCLA over Berkeley.

I'm not 100% sure if thats right, but thats kind of wut I observed. Just addin my two cents in.

Where I lived, usually nobody had heard of either one. But when they had, they thought UCLA was just very "sekushii," and Cal was where "atama ga ii" people went.

I met a few farmers in Saga who had heard of UCLA. They said something incomprehensible and Sagaben-ish, but it sounded pretty good.

Seriously, Saga is weird.

By the way, the title made me think we were going to play a game. "Where in the world is Carmen...I mean UCLA a "WOW" university?" I get to be the computer guy.
