From looking at cp’s housing site…http://www.housing.calpoly.edu/
I take it I have two options for housing…First year connection or living and learning program…

LL program seems more structured, you live with people who are in your major, but is that really necessary? I just have no idea what to choose…

same here...where is the best place to stay? Does it really matter? Is there a big difference among the dorms? Any advice would be great.

I was just up in SLO last weekend to check out the dorms. The red bricks (llp dorms) have smaller rooms, but everyone in your building is in a similiar major. With the Engineering dorm I heard it's like taking the biggest nerd at your school and multiplying that person by 100. Sierra madre and Yosemite are decent. Sierra madre has single sex floors which alternate; girls floor, guys floor, etc. Yosemite has two co-ed floors and one single sex floor in each tower. So it just depends on whether or not you mind living near the opposite gender. Oh, and if you were an early applicant, your tower at Sierra madre has all other early applicants too.
