Does anyone know where the thread with the link for the elite college admissions video is? I saw it a few months ago. It’s some video where PBS got to sit in on the application process at Amherst…if anyone knows where it is please tell me!

Go to the Amherst website under admissions. They have a link for it there. Good luck.

Thanks. It's such an intimidating video!

I haven't seen the video but it should be intimidating. Many applicants have a good idea of their own strengths but totally underestimate the quality of their competition and are far too optimistic as a result. A good rule of thumb is that if your profile is like the average Amherst admittee, you have a below average chance of being admitted. Sounds a bit counterintuitive.

The competition at these school is fierce. The video was not very helpful to me though; certainly, it didn't let you see what goes on with the folder before it gets to the committee. Aye, there's the rub! One scary part was about the boy who had a family legacy and was turned down. On the other hand, after they accept 1000 students, more than half turn them down and decide to go elsewhere. Interesting!

Amherst like Williams, Dartmouth and a handful of other schools are considered a half notch down by some from HYP. While admission to any of these would be wonderful, there usually is an Ivy in the mix come April 1st.
I believe the correct # is 15% when HYP is part of the group. (at least that is the percentage Williams reports).

Last year from watching this board many kids chose Amherst and Williams after being rejected by Brown and Columbia whose acceptance rates are a little lower.

And there are those that turned down HYP for Amherst, as well. It depends on the kid and what best fits each individual.

evitajr1......Your child chose Amherst instead of Princeton.
I am sure that was a difficult decision. What is she planning to major in.
Did she visit Princeton or any of the other schools that she was accepted to? How does she like the Amherst fit?

My son had the same choices but Princeton won out do to the proximity of the campus and the Art-Archaeology and Architecture dept.

Tomorrow night he will be on a 2 1/2 hour train ride home:)
