Where is the finanical aid going Richmond?

Accepted, but no financial aid! It’s nuts! My daughter went to a private school and they got the financial aid package down to public school prices, which is typical of private schools. I have come to the conclusion that Richmond gives big money to overqualified students in order to bring up their stats. They entice students that would get into ivy leagues with their huge financial aid packages. They say that they also meet need based aid, but how low does your income need to by to qualify? Seems like well qualified, middle class students are left in the dust! We had heard they had wonderful financial aid packages so my son applied, but I wish we had known the truth; false hope! He will not be able to attend. Unfortunately the reach schools in VA were out of his reach! UVA and William & Mary raise the bar year after year. If a student with a 31 ACT cannot get into the affordably priced top public schools in VA, then it seems more and more like VA students need to go out of state to attend the top colleges!

Competition at Virginia public schools has definitely increased over the past few years but don’t give up hope. Daughter with similar stats to your son was accepted at UVA, W&M, VT, and several private schools (w/ nice merit scholarships). We had been told that private schools in the area understood the competition from these schools and would attempt to make their offers competitive. We specifically targeted the University of Richmond and she absolutely loved the school. However, in the end, it didn’t matter as she was waitlisted.

I agree with your premise that the University of Richmond is attempting to entice kids that would otherwise end up at Ivy league schools with free rides or huge financial aid packages. I believe that they have a specific average cost in mind (let’s say 33k) and that full pay students are needed to subsidize the others. Rich kids, those off the waitlist, and those are a reach for Richmond fill this role nicely.
