Where My UC Transfer Business/Business Econ/Econ Majors At?!...Let's Chat: stats, etc

Being a business major is the way to go! imo...you have a vast array of jobs applicable (note I used the word applicable and not available!...this current job market is shi*!)...

In any case, I created this thread for us to chat it up and maybe post our stats in one place (it's kind of annoying to hunt through other threads to find my fellow business majors ;))

I personally want to pursue entrepreneurship.

My Stats:

Current School: UC Irvine

Current Major: Business Economics

Applied: Business Economics @ UCLA, Economics @ Cal (I am a UC-UC transfer applicant)

GPA: 3.933

Extra Curricular Activities: UCI Entrepreneur Society Active Member since Fall '08,
Currently Participating in SCORE (Counselor's to America's Small Business) workshops with certificate upon completion. Dean's Honor's list all quarters. Extensive Volunteer-work throughout High School.

Work: Internet Marketing and Sales position at a Small Business for ~4.2 years (2006-present, 12 hours a week)...grew the business by over 30% in terms of profits.

Prereqs: All Done.

does Quantitative Economics and Econometrics count?

@ xelink
hells yeah!..you definitely get tha business lovin’!

I’ve been accepted to UCI(and SB) for econ but changed my major to quant econ. Also did biz admin at UCR and Biz finance at CSULB and CSUFullerton.

all I want is an overpaid business job in orange county…

@xelink

lol I know what you mean ;)…I want an overpaid job in SF before I go to grad school!

I also intend to go to grad school. Which is why I’m opting for my major and UCI.
UCI = higher GPA than UCLA or UCB
Quant Econ = more econometrics courses which grad schools like.

I’m basically a whore.

Ya I’ve maintained a high gpa here but networking with other business majors is better at Cal/UCLA.

definitely true there.

I’m basically forced to rely on graduate school for networking purposes. Does have me a bit on the fringe, but ohh well. As it stands, I’m basically forced to rely on my father’s networking which is OK but not great. What can you do, ehh?

yeah…I applied to the bus admin major here at UCI and it’s hella hard to get into…if I get into both LA and the bus. admin here I dunno what to do since bus admin. is more along the lines of my focus (entrepreneurship), yet networking is also of prime importance.

For you, since you mostly just wanna get a job, networking is secondary to your grades and score on the GMAT…I think you’ll find it fairly easy to maintain a high GPA here at UCI and thus you are on the right track…grad school for networking would fit your needs quite sufficiently :)

that’s what I’m thinking.

I have a fairly strong case of ADHD so focusing is hard for me, but I’ll be medicating myself once I transfer. I’m hoping to get into a top grad school for either econ or business.

some advice, if you intend to do econ, the GRE, NOT the GMAT is what matters. Furthermore, many business schools accept the GRE in lieu of the GMAT.

here’s a good read.
[How I Got Into the Stanford Psychology Ph.D. Program](http://www.howigotintostanford.com/)

don’t know how truthful it is, BUT it does raise good points. Those looking to get into grad school should focus on getting good grades in their last 60/90 units in college, take more advanced courses when possible, get REALLY gungho on research and should prep for the GMAT and/or GRE to the best of their ability. Recommendations SHOULD be able to take care of themselves if you’re doing this(you should be on a first name basis with several respected economists/businessmen and in a GOOD way)

that said these are my goals
graduate from UCI with a solid GPA
internship(s)
have solid research and field experience
work a bit
more research
???
caltech, standford, berkeley, upenn, nyu, etc.

I’ll get back to you in 5 years to let you know how successful I am, right now, I feel the important part is that I know what direction I want to move in and that I’m working to advance myself. I still have no idea *** I want to do in life, all I know is that I want options. Flexibility is more important than ever in today’s society.

Woo Econ at UCLA (pending), UCSD (accepted), and UCSB (accepted), Political Econ UCB (pending)

Econ at UCLA & Cal(pending)and UCSD & UCD (Accepted)

I just got the new US news and world report with the top MBA programs

Off the bat the top 25 schools will land you $120,000+ job

^ LOL you are misinformed.

You really think it doesn’t work that way? My dad got his MBA from peperdine and told me his started at about 75,000, given that was a while back.

And it’s an average, but it is pretty realistic. Pick up a copy of US news & world report if you don’t believe me…Harvard starts at 131,219 and Georgetown ends at 106,012…

don’t the mid tiered UCs outrank peperdine in everything except hot girls?

Hahahahahah yes they do. This was a while back when Pepperdine wasn’t only about the bezis

Hmmm… I was wondering if a thread like this would arise seeing as how econ and biz econ are very common majors, or at least they seem to be haha. Anyways, my stats are

Major: Biz Econ (UCLA), Econ (UCBerkeley)
GPA: 3.78
UCLA TAP filled out and all prereqs/IGETC completed

Based on GPA alone you guys think I have a good chance of getting in?
Also whats the difference between biz econ and econ anyway? lol They are both impacted at UCLA so ones not easier to get into than the other right?

I have stats extremely similar too your own, but I think you have a good chance. I don’t know if business Econ is really harder to get into, but maybe just a tad bit.

@ transferuc

Yeah man! Common Misconception…both Biz econ and econ at UCLA are hard to get into…almost equally, in fact…the stats speak for themselves:

UCLA Biz Econ Transfer Acceptance Rate for 2009: 13.76%
UCLA Econ Transfer Acceptance Rate for 2009: 14.61%

Very, Very Close.

Maybe it’s better I’m just Econ, I just hate accounting.
