Hi, I was recently accepted to Cal Poly as a transfer for the Fall 2011 quarter, and I was wondering where some of the transfer students live. I live in an apartment now where I go to Fresno State, and I looked at some of the apartment style complexes at Cal Poly and they seemed fairly nice. I definitely do not want to live in the dorms.

Would anyone recommended getting an apartment? I don’t know very many people who go there, so I’m not sure how easy that would be.

Are the Cerro Vista or Poly Canyon Village apartments good if I wanted to live there year round? Do most of the students go home for winter and summer breaks?

Price is not too big of an issue, and I realize rent will be a steep price compared to Fresno prices. (I pay 315 now living right across the street from FS) However I certainly would not like to get ripped off.

I think I would like an apartment, but that might not be able to happen. I am probably going to go down there for Preview day, so maybe I will take a look at some of the options. Any advice or comments are greatly appreciated, thanks!

well only freshmen can live in the dorms, so you definitely won’t have to live in a dorm. most students who live in poly canyon and cerrp go home over winter break, but if you live in cerro you can stay. Over the summer I think the only option for housing is cerro, but I’m not sure. people who take summer school and maybe some who work stay over the summer.

Well, in total, poly canyon and cerro can hold about 3,000 students. There about 19,000 total enrolled, so a lot of people do live off campus. But a decent amount of sophomores live on campus and some juniors and seniors do too.

Few years ago, my son looked at extending his spring Cerro stay to summer school. Also checked out a few off-campus apartments regarding the summer-fall break. Renting a storage space was ruled out. For us, it turned out to be too much of a hassle over what to do with his stuff during the spring-summer break and the summer-fall break.

Might contact Housing (or ask when you visit) and see what it takes to do year round living for this & next year, as things change every year. Check some off-campus housing as there could be more options. Maybe other students living off-campus can give their take on this, too?

Oh, ok, thanks for the information. It looks to me like it would be a little pricey to live in the on campus living if I wanted a single. I hope I can find an apartment then.

If you are planning to live in Cerro Vista or Poly Canyon during the summer ( or any time for that matter), be aware there is NO Air Conditioning. And yes it can get VERY warm in SLO.

Cerro Vista and Poly Canyon are very nice living arrangements though as far as on campus housing. Lots of privacy. If you dont mind no A/C !
