where should i apply for phd programs in political science?

Hi,

I am currently in getting my MA in legal and political theory from University College London and am trying to figure out where I have a good chance of getting in for Ph D programs for next fall. I want to apply to three schools (two competitive and then one "safety").

Undergrad in Poli Sci from UNCW: 3.83 gpa, 4.0 in political science (with University Honors, and Honors in Political Science)
GRE scores: 670 verbal, 690, math
good letters of recommendation

(Also, I immediately went to work after my undergraduate degree in a completely unrelated field (HR) and worked for three years and was wondering if being 'out of the loop' for three years would count against me if i apply to some of the more competitive schools.

I have not published any papers, but as an undergraduate I did present my honors thesis at the NC Political Science Association Conference)

My main area of interest is studying the relationship between the media and politics.

Thanks so much for your help!

3? Why 3? PhD programs in the US are extremely competitive. You’ll want to apply to a minimum of 5 or 6 if you can.

Being out of the loop won’t count against you. They’ll see that you’ve had some life experience, which is what they like.

Start by reading articles/books that you like and find out where those professors are teaching and where they got their PhDs, and then look at those programs. That’s how most people figure out which programs they should apply to.
