How are you all doing? I'm not to shabby, but I am a little lost in the whole college application process. I recently took an SAT and scored a 2040, with a 670 math, 630 CR, and 740 writing. I plan to take math iic and chem SAT 2 tests during june. Hoping for a 750+ chemistry and 730 or better math iic.

I currently rank 6 out of 215 kids at my school; I have a plethora of E.C.s but need to work a little bit on leadership positions:

National Honor Society
First Chair alto sax concert band (weekly lessons)
1st chair alto jazz band
Bass in the school chorus
Varsity Cross-country (3 letters)
Varsity track (2 letters)
Light crew for musical
Academic Decathlon
Interact Club
Boy Scouts of America (quit as life scout)
Avid skier (as implied by my name)
volunteer 100+ hours at a local hospital
Interning for an IT professional this summer

My goal next year is to become captain of the cross-country team and president of the national honor society. I have an interest in engineering and my dream is to become an MD. Any suggestions? matches, safeties, reaches?

where do you live (state)?

Location: Massachusetts

lol- didn't see that... well in that case I'd say NYU, UMass, any of the ivies as a reach

That was being a little harsh. Your SATs aren't great but you have nice EC's and if you wrote a nice essay and got good teacher rec's, you definitely would stand a chance at many competitive schools. I do agree, though, ivies may be a reach unless you found something that you really stand out in and then make a big deal about it on your app.

if you are a URM, you can get into HYP.

Yeah...the only ivy I was even looking at was cornell. I forgot to tell you Im only a junior so I have at least one more chance to dominate on my SAT I test. A nice 780 math world definitely improve my chances at an upper-tier college. Either that or go to umass amherst for free...lol

"if you are a URM, you can get into HYP." what's URM?

URM = under represented minority...aka native americans; blacks; hispanics; and some asians

god bless america for URM

yeah, its a shame that I am not a minority...

I know a kid who got into Harvard with a 1020. He was the last remaining member of a nearly extinct ancient south Pacific islander tribe. He was an awesome football player and he went to IMO for Vanuatu once. lol just kidding

I noticed another person brought up "A Is For Admission" ... I checked the book out at the local library and flipped to the URM chapter.

It shows several case studies. It shows a Hispanic and Native American with fairly low statistics, but excellent rank and also nothing really interesting. Because they were a URM, they were accepted.

Ivies crave minorities because they get federal aid from the government as well as recognition for the most minorities.
