Nominated for captain in 9th
Learnt Video editing using Sony Vegas pro in 11th
Learnt yoga for 1 year
Might build a website for my yoga teacher as an internship.

I want to do Computer Engineering
Is CMU realistic?
UIUC sounds on par.
Would Georgia tech be a safe school?
Any other Recomendations.

First of all, why would you think that georgia tech would be a safe school? It’s considered public for u.s. students, not international. Public schools are notorious for having a very low admissions rate for OOS and international students (especially one as good and well known as GT). Hence, it is far from being considered a safe school. You may need to boost your sat a bit more (probably x>2150) if you want admissions at CMU and all the ones that you mentioned. Some of your ecs need more depth (ex: why have you given only 2 performances when you have 3 years of experience?). Build into your activities. Also, try to get an internship that is computer related, so you know how it is like to have comp sci as a career and know its twist and turns. Since you have taken advanced courses in it, try to implement and use those programs for something creative. Nothing too big, and a website (from scratch that is) would certainly showcase those abilities.
Here are the schools that may be considered safe for you at present:
University of washington
university of wisconsin-madison
university of maryland-college park
Purdue (ranked 20)
Ohio state
Penn state-university park
rutgers

Uptil purdue, all the schools mentioned above it are less than 20 ranked. Below (in order as before) descend in numerical value, greater than rank 20.
I think these would be what I consider safe for you. Other ppl may have different opinions.

I thought Georgia tech would be safe because ■■■■■■■■■■ rated my chances as high. No other reason. I was under the impression it was easy to get into.
Guitar I actually have 3 performances,no where close to enough but better than nothing. I really did not get the time in 11th and now 12th to do ANYTHING i learnt Vegas pro in the 2 month summer hols. Indian system does not encourage extra curricular My schedule was jam packed academics.
Internship with my yoga teacher is not official its just by the way. That is also acceptable though isn’t it?
I realize that CMU is a reach, a far reach but no harm in trying.
UIUC 2030 not good enough? Are you sure?
Of the universities you listed which one is the best for comp sci?
Would visiting companies/plants count as EC?
CHEERS and thanks,
Arjun Krishnan

You are right OP. Most of those ECs don’t count (Learning yoga, ALL activities of grade 8, nomination for captain).

Gatech - high reach
Purdue - on par (duh)
CMU - unrealistic
UIUC - reach

No harm in trying for any. You never know :)

EDIT: All safeties are in Liveulife’s list. Except maybe UW madison

I’ve listed the safeties in order of their ranking. Top one (University of Washinton) is #7, and the rest are in top 20 (except the ones below Purdue).
I read over UIUC for some reason, but it is a good reach for you as well. I actually think UW madison is a safety because although its programs are well ranked, it’s admissions isn’t that selective (57%).

^ woah lots of grammar mistakes in my previous post. I came back and realized that I hadn’t answered your last question, so here is what I have to say.

When you say “VISITING”, it doesn’t count for much actually. I’ve done plenty of “visits”, and I thought that they did nothing but simply pad my resume with useless nonsense. I don’t intend to offend anyone, but trust me. Those visits helped me a lot, but they weren’t a great accomplishment. All I did was see things that I probably would have not seen on a daily basis…something that I could have accomplished by a field trip. A day of visit can perhaps impact you, but it certainly isn’t going to make admissions wow over you. However, if that visit encouraged you to eventually end up spending a good amount of time progressing in the area you got passionate about, that would certainly be a wow factor. For example, I got a summer internship in what I’m majoring now. Before early deadline/regular round, you have a lot of time, so I would prompt you to start on something comp sci related ASAP. Now if you can job shadow a specific worker in that company, it would give you some credentials. Since at India, doing research is kind of rare for HS students, I would recommend you get a volunteer job at a certain company/plant. Do it for 2 months, and that is minimum. This experience will give you something to write about in your college essays as well, since it will be quite recent to your memory (if you intend to plan for 2012 fall admissions).

OK. looks like my application is not as good as I had originally imagined.
@compscifan I understand why 8th grade would not count but why wouldn’t learning yoga? I thought that would be impressive. Isn’t Gtech easier to get into than UIUC? According to a few sources its average SAT score on admission is higher at UIUC than Gtech.

@liveUlife I didn’t think that visits really helped much. They weren’t even related to comp sci. I visted Toyota, Coco cola, Biscuit factory and Milk federation.
My uncle owns a startup in Bangalore called Althea systems.I could intern there i guess. It’s comp related they built a video discovery platform. It might be tough but I could get a few hours a week in.

cheers,
Arjun Krishnan

ok i read ur post and skipped the rest!
well, what i believe is that u need to really work hard on extra-currics! yoga and stuff wont help much! know ur teacher well ( infact very well) for a stronger recommendation letter! and ideal SAT should be abv 2200 for a GOOD college!! thats all what I think! hope that helped!
p.s another enthusiast here! :)

@Rewant24: GOOD doesn’t really quite make it to describe a 2200. That is a statistical judgement that really bites back b/c if one is able to attain stellar ecs, their chances in getting to a GOOD school are fine. Of course, that is given if an intnl has over 2100. If you get an SAT over 2200, the college you will most likely get into are described as AUSPICIOUS.
OP: Improve your resume step by step in the short timeframe you have. Don’t imagine yourself on the clouds…but rather set proper goals that are realistic.

You seriously need to work on your writing score, it’ll hurt you a lot.

Grab a collegeboard/princeton book man. Writing is mad easy. I did a few practice problems over 4 weeks and learned about a few twists and turns that helped me out loads. If you want some writing rules, send me a message and I’ll send you tips b/c the portion focuses heavily on such concepts. With practice on these, you can get around 700 or even 700+
