Where should I apply?

So far I know I'm applying to the following schools- UF, FSU, USF, Ga Tech & Rice University. What I would like to know is which are my reach schools, match schools, and safety schools?

About me-

My biggest mistake was trying out different clubs each year & not sticking with one to get leadership... and i got written up for cheating (doing someones work for them) but i learned from it and hope it wont affect me (got me on probation for NHS :( )

Anyways.. any insight would be nice and any university recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I plan to major in Chemical Engineering and I would prefer to stay in the Southeast..I would love to go to California but i think it's too expensive?

Thanks

What are your parents willing to pay? Do you qualify for financial aid?

I have a pre paid college program from my parents and I will qualify for financial aid (i’ll be considered ‘independent’) but i’d like to graduate with little or no dept

What’s your gpa?

what is your unweighted gpa?

3.87 unweighted, 4.27 weighted

Are you 24, a former military member or have a dependent (child or spouse)?

What state are you a resident of?

No but Im a ward of the state…

Florida.

Reach: Rice, GT
Match: UF
Safety:FSU, USF

If you want to go to California try Occidental you could do the 3+2 program with either Cal Tech or Columbia 2 top engineering schools You might be interested in this

Good GPA mediocre ACT. Have you thought about UVA as a reach school. Also rice may be a low reach. My biggest advice would be to get your ACT up. The rest are matches and safeties. Good luck ad feel free to chance me back http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?p=16162060#post16162060

What is a ‘low reach’? and no i haven’t thought of UVA but I’ll look into it.

SHould i add anymore schools to my list?

And I feel like i cant’ take the ACT again because i already took it 3 times: 27, 30, & a 29. If i could get my math up that would make a lot of difference but i thought it looked bad to take it 4 times. Plus i cant afford the fancy tutoring services…

And i will also look into Occidental College, Thank you

your only academic safety is USF - try to look for other schools with strong honors program and ABET accreditation (honors = opportunity for research, first pick of classes, etc / ABET = standardized engineering program).
If you’re willing to go, ity’s both an academic and financial safety for you so it’s enough. If not, you may want to look into one more school you like better.
ACT + GPA should qualify you for many Honors Programs and merit scholarships in addition to your need-based aid.
You could conceivably do Biochemistry and computational science at New College (ncf);
Look into the Harriett Wilkes Honors program, you’d have a guaranteed scholarship but they may be too small to offer your major.
U of Miami is ABET accredited.
Flagler, Lynn, Eckerd, Rollins could be investigated for the strength of their science programs.
If willing to move farther away, look into Lehigh, Lafayette, Bucknell.

Does anyone know anything about Florida Institute of Technology? It’s private, which i was trying to avoin bc of the cost but still…
Considering my situation is private really going to be ridiculously expensive, or will it be managable once aid is considered?
Is Purdue a safety or a match for me?

Purdue is a match.

Private colleges can be of a similar cost as public if they offer you need-based and merit-based aid, so you’d need to rank in the top 20% applicants to have a shot and in the top 10% to be certain to get something.
Since your tuition at a Florida public is essentially covered, look into the top Florida publics (UF, USF - and UF’s + FSU’s Honors programs + NCF) but why not apply to 2-3 private schools that you really like and see which school costs the least for you?
The odds of your getting financial aid if you go out of state increase if you go out of state far away from Florida but not in a big city (ie, not Boston, NYC, Philadelphia…)
If you’re willing to consider FIT, why not look into WIP or RPI (better schools, in a different part of the country)?

Emory as a match? Just for reg engineering, they dont have ChemE

Purdue would be full cost ($42K/year) so it is not a safety.
Another way to look at this is Public Us cost the same as Private if you are OOS.

I have a pre paid college program from my parents and I will qualify for financial aid (i’ll be considered ‘independent’) but i’d like to graduate with little or no dept

So, does that mean that you have a Florida prepaid? How much does that cover? Does it cover about $5k per year for tuition if used OOS or at a private?

You should apply to Bama…very good ChemE (my son just graduated with ChemE from Bama).

You would get FREE TUITION plus 2500 per year from Bama for your stats. With your pre-paid and likely Pell Grant, Bama would be affordable. IT’s an easy safety for you. The app is online NOW…and easy to do…no LORs and no essays. You also need to do the scholarship app, even tho you’ll surely get the money.

So is Purdue far enough away that my chances of getting aid would increase?
RIP, WPI, NCF…all options i haven’t considered that i will look into for sure

And I’m suprised that I would get that much from a public school (Bama) because I thought bigger schools gave out less to students like me because they attract the 36 on the ACT students that started their own company in high school haha but I don’t know how much my prepaid will pay- ill check with my parents

And shout out to Bama for not wanting a essay or LOR!
