Where should I apply?

No. You are an OOS student who, if anything, they would look to for full funding to offset costs.

Your chance of getting aid if you live far away only applies to private universities. Public universities must (logically) serve their state’s students first, so admission criteria are tougher and financial aid is very scarce for OOS (out of state applicants). Private schools on the other hand do not have such demands placed on them and like to have students from all parts of the country whereas most students attend schools within 400-500 miles of home, hence an advantage if you find a private college farther away than 500 miles. In addition, you’re lucky to be from Florida since Bright Futures keeps many top students in state, therefore making it harder for far-away schools to attract bright Florida students (Boston, New York and LA don’t count in that calculation :p.)

Gotcha MYOS1634

The Bama application isn’t open for Fall or 2014 yet though.

Does Bama have a good reputation for engineering and will I be able to get a job after?

Bama does have a good rep for engineering and the school won’t be the thing that might prevent getting a job. I’m pretty sure I saw Mom2CK write that the app is open now.

The app is open for 2014.

[Application Checklist - Undergraduate Admissions - The University of Alabama](http://gobama.ua.edu/apply/checklist/)

Oh, my bad. I clicked on the printable version so it didn’t have to Fall of 2014 option but when I clicked on apply online it did.

So is Purdue far enough away that my chances of getting aid would increase?

No. Purdue gives about $10k per year for high stats…usually an ACT 32+. I don’t think you’d get much/anything for a 30. Purdue is a public univ.

Ok so to narrow it down which schools would be my best bet considering both finances and academic reputation? Or should I apply to all 9?

FSU, UF, USF, UA, Ga Tech, WPI, Rice, Florida Tech, Purdue

Why are you considering reputation? As long as the program is ABET accredited it is considered a program that meets all the standards. Purdue is too expensive unless your family is willing to pay $42K/year. Are they?

OP- did you notice that WPI is test-optional? Since your test scores are lower than your GPA, you may want to use that application path. You do need to submit supplemental materials. [Undergraduate Admissions: Admissions Requirements - WPI](http://www.wpi.edu/admissions/undergraduate/apply/requirements.html)

I just thought reputation was important in finding a job, and no we will not be paying 42k a year so I’ll eliminate Purdue…

& Yeah i saw that WPI was test optional, you have the choice to do the Flex-Path but I haven’t done anything so awesome in my high school years that I could send them. I could do something this summer to sent them, but I haven’t already completed something for school that would fit the bill

Is is dumb to eliminate a school bc of the weather?

& what is a ‘low reach’ vs a ‘reach’?

anyone have info on Virginia Tech?

If a student opts for “test optional” then getting merit scholarships is often out of the question. Test Optional schools usually insist on scores to award merit.

I just thought reputation was important in finding a job, and no we will not be paying 42k a year so I’ll eliminate Purdue…

lol…“reputation”…no, companies know that there are over 100 good engineering programs out there…seriously! There are over 25 good eng’g schools in Calif alone!!! This country needs SO MANY engineers that a few schools couldn’t possibly supply most of the them! This country is hiring grads from over a 100 programs.

I come from a family of engineers…VPs, directors, hiring managers (Boeing, DirecTV, Northrop Grumman, etc)…they hire the PERSON, not the school. They’ll pay the graduate from Purdue (my H’s alma mater) the same as the graduate from UA-Hunsville or CSU LongBeach.

I live near UA-Huntsville. That’s a 3rd tier school, but it has reputable engineering, so the grads get immediately hired.

That’s good to know @mom2collegekids… so i don’t have to stress over the cost of going out of state & the bill that would go with it lol

*Ok so to narrow it down which schools would be my best bet considering both finances and academic reputation? Or should I apply to all 9?

FSU, UF, USF, UA, Ga Tech, WPI, Rice, Florida Tech, Purdue*

As for money…you’re not going to get what you need from: FSU, UF, GT, Purdue. Don’t know what Florida Tech offers…is that Florida A&M??? is that a HBSC?

If you want money: Bama, UAH, Miss State, maybe the Arizona schools…New Mexico…

Bama is the highest ranked school to give assured big awards (full tuition, and more)

No Florida A&M is in Tallahassee with FSU and Florida Tech is in Melbourne, I don’t know what a HCSB is…
& how do you know that those schoos will/won’t give me money? Is there a list or poll that shows that or do you just know from experience?

There’s so many options it’s overwhelming…

can i get a bump

You’re pretty much covered at any Florida school financially; therefore it’s a given you’ll apply there.
Now the choices are between the different other schools. Remember that only the OOS private schools will have significant financial aid for you, not the OOS publics.
Then you can add one or two “just to see” (schools like MIT or Stanford - the odds are low but it’s up to you whether you want to “see” if you have a shot or if you’d rather not waste the money.)
Remove Purdue: it won’t offer you enough aid as an OOS applicant.
Keep Rice and WPI in.
Compare USF and Florida Tech as I assume both are your safeties. Of course you can keep both so that if everything else fails you’ll still have a choice between your two safeties, but I can’t imagine that you’d be rejected from FSU AND UF AND UA with your stats and life story.
