My parents met in Boston College. My dad went to UVA for business and my mom went to Maryland for masters, but I'm hoping to go somewhere better. Any recommendations? I'm having a really hard time choosing what school i should be interested in as well (ie: I don't know if I would prefer rural or urban schools.)

Great stats and prospects.

Knowing your academic interests and regions to rule out would help us. Until you sit down with mom and dad, the net price calculator, and their last year’s income tax returns, you won’t have the biggest part of the college search process. You can say your parents’ incomes are very high, but that doesn’t tell us a lot of things, like how much they’re agreeing to plunk down or how much schools will expect them to plunk down. If your parents have filed separately, there’s often some disagreement about each one’s responsibilities. I hope that doesn’t happen, but it’s not unusual. So why don’t you get to work on your parents, and in the meantime help us with interests and regions so that we can begin to rule out some things. There are thousands of schools for which you’ll likely qualify. There’s no point in our naming them for you ;+)

And, yeah, volunteering at the archives could help. You’re looking for experience and a letter of rec. The archives will require you to go thru a vetting process, so get started now. Lots of students have already applied.

Get that GPA up even if you’re private schooled.

Thanks so much!
Interests and regions:
For regions I definitely think the west coast would be a cool change of pace, since I’ve visited family there a few times. Washington, Oregon, and California are all really cool places. I’m looking at Georgetown just because I’ve been there for a play I did and the area seemed really fun. I also really like the tour I went on there. I think I’d prefer someone on one of the coasts, and I wouldn’t really like the deep south/ northern midwest, but if its a significant different academics would outweigh region.

Career-wise I’m intrested in Law, stocktrading, writing, and programming. I’m going to measure my intrestin in computers next year in APCS. My parents want me to major math or something similar since they both did and they think it would work best for getting a job, so maybe math major or CS major with a finance minor?

My parents have told me that if I can get into somewhere better than UVA then they would almost definitely be willing to pay for it. Our money situation isn’t as amazing as it would seem (6 kids going to college) but we make enough money that I wont get any non-scholarship financial aid anywhere.

I do go to a private school. Its pretty competitive (everyone who tool the PSAT had above average scores with about 250 kids in the grade.) so my class rank is not stellar (theres no class ranks but they give general spectrums.) Its got a good relationship with both Georgetown and UVA (4.1 weighted GPA basically guarantees a spot at Georgetown) but it historically has trouble getting kids into ivy leagues, although this year we had a kid get into Harvard, Princeton (off of crew), Brown, and UPenn.

I am working on my grades, and I’ve seen and general upward sloe since freshman year. I think I can have a 4.0 weighted by the end of this year or the end of 1st quarter senior year.

I want you to do some more of the work narrowing things down. You’ve helped us with this info, but I want you to use SuperMatch to help you to come up with some names and ideas on your own. I suggest you do it twice, once with a 3.5 and a 2380 and once with a 3.7 and a 2300. Make sure to plug in majors, regions of the country, eliminating states where you can, etc.

Then I want you to look for schools that give a lot of money, like full tuition, to applicants who are National Merit Finalists. Just google it.

You don’t seem obsessed with prestige, so I’m thinking you’ll have a broader pool of schools if you stick with that and you’ll have more chances at merit. The GPA is a concern when it comes to admission at ivies and elites and your family income probably will hurt grants at those schools. But it’s real early yet

Having said all that, UVA is probably one of your best choices for cost, so keep that in your pocket. it’s a really good fallback for an elite college. I don’t know that with a 3.5 an in-state white male with a 2300 would be guaranteed admission, however.
