Where should I apply?

Where should I apply?

Looking for schools with lots of merit aid

1530/1600 SAT
4.4 GPA
33 ACT
11 AP Classes
Ranked 16/900 in my very competitive high school
Female

Lots of Extracurriculars, including Varsity Athletics, Student Council, Hospital Internship, part time job, Volunteer activities.

Looking for a medium to large school, preferably with a decent football team, in a warmer weather area but I am somewhat flexible. My major will be Pre-Med or Biology.

So far I have applied to UGA, Auburn, Old Miss, FSU. Still plan to apply to UVA and Vanderbilt.

Thanks in advance for any other suggestions! I live in Georgia so I am looking for schools that might be able to compete financially with Hope/Zell Miller which will pay a lot of my tuition if I stay in state.

Tulane, SMU

Alabama is an obvious choice. Look here: http://automaticfulltuition.yolasite.com/

There is no such major a pre-med, just pre-med prerequisite courses that have to be completed in addition to whatever you decide to major in. (40% of med students do not have STEM majors so pick whatever you enjoy most.)

And yes, you want to avoid debt. Medical school is wickedly expensive. How much are you willing to pay? And take a look at Rice (Houston) and Pomona. Pomona is a LAC but it’s part of a 5 school consortium of contiguous campuses, so you have 5,000 undergraduates living, working and sharing resources in sunny Claremont, CA.

U of Alabama, of course.

Here’s some Georgia schools that give good aid, or are low cost:

-Agnes Scott College (average aid $31,320)
-Berry College (average aid $20,606)
-Columbus State ($16,463 with R&B)
-Georgia Southern University ($4,078 tuition)
-Mercer University (average aid $31,192)
-Oglethorpe University (average aid $26,500)
-Southern Polytechnic State ($5,732 tuition)

Definitely apply to Alabama now, before the scholarship deadline. With your stats, you’d get FREE tuition, which compares with Zell Miller.

Auburn’s OOS merit for your stats isn’t that great…only about 2/3 tuition. that doesn’t “compete” with Zell Miller.

Presidential Scholarship
Requires a 33-36 ACT or 1440-1600 SAT score and a minimum 3.5 high school GPA for consideration.
Awarded at $64,000 over four years ($16,000 per year).

No point in going to an OOS public that won’t provide a “tie” for entrance into their med schools. The state of Miss pretty much only accepts instate students into its med school… so no benefit going there.

What are your parents saying about how much they’ll pay each year?

As mentioned above, “premed” isn’t a major. It’s a path or “track”, which includes several premed prereqs, which are just regular science classes…nothing unique about them.

If you want to go to med school, major in a subject that you love and will get a high a high GPA.
