Where should I apply?

Hi everyone!
I feel as if I should apply to a couple more schools just as a safety/ to see where I can go. I’m looking for a more-prestigious/well-known school. I got into the University of Iowa, where I’m from, and applied to UCLA, UCSD, and for some reason, I decided to apply to UCB even though a slim to none chance. I was thinking about applying at NYU and GW for business, but I am afraid my stats are too low. Please suggest schools I would fit in at!
GPA: 3.56
ACT Composite: 30
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female

Majors: Economics and Spanish
Minor: Russian

APHUG: 4
AP Spanish: 3
APLC: IP
AP STATS: IP

Intro to BUS102 (Dual credit): A
Dual credit Spanish: IP

I’ve taken four AP classes, 3 honors classes, and two dual-credit (through a community college) classes. I also have a language credit from the Concordia Language Villages (summer foreign language camp).

EC: Competitive All-Star cheerleading, varsity cheerleading, show choir, jazz choir, golf, bowling, and I work two part-time jobs currently. I also attended the Russian language village of Concordia for seven years as a camper, participating in the high school credit program, and I have worked there for the last three years. I am an NHS member, and I also volunteer at the local humane society.

I speak both Russian and Spanish fluently and I am a first-generation American.

My essay is very strong, at 650 words. I was directly admitted to the University of Iowa’s Tippie College of Business, a fairly good business school, which only admits 900 freshmen annually. Please let me know as I can’t wait until the spring!

Is it too late to apply to Indiana Kelley?

@mom2collegekids “November 1 is IU’s priority date for admission and the deadline for maximum scholarship consideration. Applying by November 1 will ensure that you are considered for direct admit scholarship opportunities.”

So no I’m not but I won’t get scholarships most likely.

Checking for accuracy: Your budget (from dad, mom, your savings, and the student loan) is ~$30k, right? Your dad’s income is too high for aid at CSS schools and your mom’s is too high for Pell, so you either need a school whose COA is $30k or one that will give you merit to bring it down to that.

The SUNYs are $30k for OOS students. Your ACT is on the higher end of the mid-50% for Albany, Binghamton, and Stony Brook. You may want to consider looking into their programs. The application deadline is mid-January.

One of these things is not like the other (think Sesame Street tune). You have conflicting statements there - a safety - see where I can go. I assume you mean see where I can be accepted since your UCs will not be affordable. I think you can still apply to Alabama. NYU will be unaffordable to it looks like you’re just looking for college acceptance wall art.

@austinmshauri @“Erin’s Dad” okay my mom is only covering seven thousand but honestly my fat will cover whatever else so let’s just pretend that any place is affordable because realistically he will pay for whatever. I’m looking for a large school with some name recognition. I have a special case with my GPA. A lot of stuff happened during my freshman year, which I wrote about in an essay, so without my freshman year I would have a 3.8, it was that detrimental.

UCs are affordable NYU is affordable I just want to see what my other options are if I don’t get into a UC. I wasn’t sure if I should apply to NYU.

Not my fat…my dad*^^

Have you checked this thread, @Lilrussian?

@austinmshauri should I look into Vanderbilt, George Washington, or NYU?

Check the Common Data Set for each college to see what their mid-50% is for the ACT. If your score is at the higher end of the range, I’d consider applying.

NYU is known for being stingy. I know your dad makes $500k/year, but unless he’s willing to lay out $70k/year (and match that for your siblings), I wouldn’t bother.

@LilRussian Vanderbilt had an 11% acceptance rate last year for women and you are deeply in the bottom 25%.Which means your chances are much lower than 11%. No realistic chance.

Same for NYU.

Yeah, I just checked the stats and I have no chance at Vanderbilt and NYU is not worth the money. Tulane is in a dangerous city, so that’s a no-go. I don’t want to apply at SDSU because of its’ rep, or a Cal State. Was going to apply to UChicago and Wash. U but my scores aren’t competitive enough. I’ve taken the ACT 4 times, I just don’t want to do it anymore. I explained in one of my essays the hardships I went through my freshman year, which resulted in my low GPA. Ever since then, I’ve maintained a 3.8 but there is no way to go back and fix what happened in the past. @TurnerT @austinmshauri

My father tries to make a 30 out to be a horrible score, which is quite disheartening as I worked really hard to get it. 30 is a decent, if not above decent, score. Yeah, if it was a 32, a huge difference would be made and it would make up for my low GPA, but 30 is not a bad score to get.

If want a really good business education with your stats there are plenty of fantastic options but you are beholden to a few requirements.

Just be more flexible. Why not apply to some others that I suggested and visit if you get accepted.

@TurnerT I’m thinking about looking into Indiana as my mom and her family are all from there, and most of them still live there! Thanks!

@LilRussian: Not sure what you mean by your comment in regards to SDSU, but they have an excellent Business program and your Stats would make you a competitive applicant. Since you are focusing on business, UCSD although an excellent school may not be the best choice for your major. I would be looking at USC, UC Irvine, UC Riverside and Santa Clara for business. Just my 2 cents worth.

If Iowa is affordable, wouldn’t it be a safety for you, since you are already admitted?

@ucbalumnus yeah but I want more options than just Iowa.

What characteristics of colleges would you be looking for that could cause you to choose a college over Iowa?

@ucbalumnus a larger university, not religiously affiliated, well known. I don’t want to go to a small private liberal art school.
