Where should I attend? CU, CSU or CC??? Please? Need Help!!

Well Hello! I'm a senior high school student in US. Well I came from Tajikistan on December 2012, it's a coutry in Central Asia...So im a US permanent resident, and on December 2014 it'll be 2 years for me in US. So my English isn't in that High Level but from grades 9-11 my GPA is 4.2 and my ACT score is 29 Everybody says that I got a high score on the ACT but i tell them that was just a multiple choice. My English still not that Good, but my math is in a high level, so in this my senior year I'll take AP calculus.
*So I wanna be a Dentist in the future. And my question is after graduating from high school which college works best for me?? UC or CSU or CC *I'm pretty sure that I can get accepted into UC or CSU *The reason that I'm asking is that My English isn't good enough to comprehend native speakers and have a perfect conversation with them..So if I'll go to UC or CSU I don't wanna struggle there cz they gonna do a really hard work.
*Or should I go to CC first and then transfer to UC or USD, I'M just stuck here...plz give me any advice
**Thank you very much for your time

find a UC that offers extra assistance/classes for ESL students. Maybe they all offer this.

@dilshod1996‌:

1) For the UC’s, you are required to take the APWE (Analytical Writing Proficiency Exam) prior to entering the Universities if you do not get a high enough score on your SAT/ACT or have not taken AP English and passed with a 3.
What are your English/Writing scores on the ACT/SAT? If you do not pass the APWE, you will be placed in some remedial English classes at the UC’s and need to pass those before you can move on.

For the CSU’s, you have to take the EPT test that is required, if you have not scored high enough on the English/Writing Sections of ACT/SAT (ACT 22/SAT 500) or taken AP English with a 3 score and again if you do not pass you will be placed in remedial English.

I am a little confused regarding your GPA and ACT score you posted. You have a June 25 post in which your 10-11 is 3.13 and ACT is 28. Now you are posting your 9-11 GPA is 4.2 with an ACT 29. Which is correct or do you have a downward trend which will not be looked upon favorably. Did you retake the ACT to raise your score 28 to 29? What are your scores broken out by English/Writing etc…?

2) CSU’s and UC’s do not use freshman year grades in their GPA calculation. So what is your CSU/UC GPA weighted. see the link: <a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU;

If you feel you need extra help with your English, you would be better off attending a CC and improving there, than spending extra money at the UC’s and CSU’s taking the extra remedial classes. Transferring from a CC to a CSU and UC should not be a problem as long as you maintain a competitive GPA and have met all the transfer requirements.

Hey Gumbymom thank you very much for your help. I really appreciate your help. Again thanks a lot!!
So regarding my GPA sorry about that I’m a little confused I counted 9-11 and did something wrong on calculating. Regarding my ACT score it’s 28, not 29. Sorry about that…I’m just confused…You know I’m stressing greatly over this…and need more help.
*So you said if I don’t pass APWE I’ll be placed in some remedial English classes at UC’s , so I wanna know what are negatives about this?
*So regarding to CC, first, my English isn’t that good comprehending books by reading them and to actually speak fluet…I can understand people but do not speak fluent and fast as native americans speak because again it has not been even 2 years for me in US. Second, OK if I go to CC first, and then transfer to UC’s what are the negatives about that, is it gonna hurt my degree cz I wanna be a doctor, dentist…
**Lastly, what do you think, should I attend CC first and then transfer, or should I attend CU’s and take the APWE, and try to pass that??
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR HELP GUMBYMOM. I’M STRESSING GREATLY OVER THIS, because on november this year I should apply for UC’s, so time is short, no on can advice me beside you…
Again, THANK YOU!!

@dilshod1996: Did you calculate your UC GPA? Is it 3.1 or 4.2 weighted or what??? What is your English/Writing result from the ACT? If your English/Writing score on the ACT is 30 or higher, then you are exempt from the AWPE.
You take the AWPE after you have been accepted to a UC.
You have not posted your UC GPA or all your results from the ACT, so I do not even know if you have a chance for acceptance at any UC.

Getting into Medical school/Dental School is mainly about high GPA and high MCAT/DAT score. If you feel you are going to have problems at a UC with the required English classes and your GPA may suffer, then you should probably start off at a CC then transfer.
CC’s have a TAG program in which you complete all the required classes, you get admission into one of the UC’s such as UCSB/UCD/UCR/UCI.

My 10-11 GPA is 3.13 weighted. I know it’s pretty low but it is reasonable. I studied in persian school in my elementary school and studied in persian, and I studied in russian school in my middle school and studied russian, and i came to USA and studied in american school in my high school, still studying, will be senior this year.
So my 10-11 GPA is 3.13 weighted. ACT is 28 overall. Reading/science is below 30. Writing is 8, English is 30. But MATH I got over 30…ACT is actually a multiple choice so I guessed for most of them in reading/writing section…
The question is after I get accepted in UC’s what’s gonna happen then, I mean am I gonna struggle, is it gonna be hard for me?? So what best works for me? Should I go to CC first? And if I go to CC am I gonna loose anything? Thank you for your time!!!

The question is not after you get accepted, the question is IF you get accepted to a UC with a 3.1 weighted GPA.
Your chances at any UC other than UC Riverside and Merced are low with that GPA unless you have extenuating circumstances such as your language issue and you fully explain it on the application. Still there is no guarantee for any of the UC’s. If you are struggling now in High School, you will definitely struggle at any UC.
Going to a CC may be your best bet but I do not understand your question about losing anything??? If cannot handle the rigor of a UC, you will be put on academic probation and eventually dismissed. If you go to a CC, you still may have to take remedial courses and take a few extra classes, but you have a better chance to transfer to a better UC in the end to continue your education. You should have guidance counselors at your school to whom you can address all your concerns. They know your record and can give you a more informed answer.

I would go to CC and then transfer to a top UCs like UCLA, UCB or UCSD. CC is more friendly to ESL. My brother went there and then transferred to a CSU.

All right thank you very much “Gumbymom” i will definitely go to CC first because you said right, if im struggling now in a high school, in UC is gonna be really hard for me right?
Regarding to “about loosing anything” I meant for instance am i gonna loose my ACT score and GPA? If yes, do i still have chance to take ACT again in CC? So if i go to CC will it cause to my degrees? And anyways how does CC transfer work? How long am I gonna be there? And what do I need to do there in order to get into UCSD?
Thank you very much for your time and your help “Gumbymom”

You’re changing my life “Gumbymom” Thanks a lot!!

Oh actually “about loosing anything” I also meant “years” like am I gonna loose extra years if I go to CC and will it cause my degrees?
Thank You “Gumbymom”

If you go to a CC, they will look at your CC GPA not your High school GPA or ACT scores. You basically start all over again. I would look at some of the UC transfer threads on this website for a lot of useful information.
The counselors at your CC will help you make a plan to succeed and transfer to your intended UC, unfortunately UCSD does not do the TAG program anymore, but there are other ways to transfer there. Just utilize all the resources available to you. Good Luck.

You know I actually wanted to take again ACT test to try to get a higher score. So if I wanna go to CC I shouldn’t necessarily take it again right? Or should I?

You don’t need to take any ACT nor SAT again because only your grades from CC counts. No high school transcripts either.

I didn’t really understand how come i don’t need my ACT score if to get into UC’s Students need to have their ACT/SAT score…

And if I go to CC can I still get a scholarship from high school to save for UCSD???

Because you are considered transferred students. I’m not understanding your last post, scholarship for what?

Scholarship for the UCSD from high school

If you have good grades you still get Regents from UCSD for transfers. But it’s based on your CC grades. Once you go to CC, high school transcript does not matter anymore.

Last year I took ACT and I got 28, so my ACT score doesn’t matter anymore , right? And there is no need to retake ACT test, correct?
