Only Op can tell if he is qualified for Questbtidge. But my guess is he will not be able to qualify. I lived in Bergen county for over 10 years in the past. It is the wealthiest county in NJ, the school Op attending is Not a local HS that you can walk to, you need to travel by car to go to that school. It’s very expensive just to go to that Hs alone. Acceptance rate is around 10% for that school. Located in an industrial town, there is hardly any residential area in town.
I could be wrong, but I believe Questbridge is out of the question for most Bergen county residents.
Tht is a HUGE generalization. The population of Bergen County is just under 1 million. There are plenty of lower-income areas of Bergen County, NJ. Do you think that not one student receives free or reduced-price lunch in the entire county? In fact, here’s the link from the Bergen Tech website to apply for free or reduced-price lunch. It’s available in English and Spanish. https://bcts.bergen.org/index.php/athleticshome
Artloverplus, first of all, I take the bus and my school is public (meaning it is free). Secondly, I am a girl (not that it really matters). Thirdly, you are correct, my parent’s combined income is above 75,000 a year, and while I feasibly cannot depend on them to support college for me because I have 3 siblings, I do not believe that I would ever qualify for scholarships meant for low-income households. That being said your generalization is completely wrong, the majority of the children at my school worked very hard to get there but do not come from wealthy families or neighborhoods. I hope that you might keep this in mind for the future since some might be discouraged and not look into the opportunity. Thank you Creekland for telling me about it I will tell my friends who will qualify.
Actually, a family of 5 making 75K may qualify for Questbridge (it’s 65K for 4 and they do take into account cost of living). So it may be worth applying for you, not just your friends. Start working on the application with your friends, the deadline is near.
Be sure to give ECmotherx2 credit too. She mentioned it first.
I agree with MYOS (again). Give it a try. You’re a family of 5 and it’s a terrific program. The worst that can happen is you don’t get selected. No big deal. The best is an awesome college…and no debt. These programs are there to try to help those who can’t afford such places and have proven themselves worthy of a chance. Tell others about it and try for it yourself.
Just a comment on Rutgers - my D had similar stats (she had slightly higher GPA, and did the SAT, but it equated to a 32 ACT) and she did not get into the Rutgers Honors college. She did get into the honors programs for the 2 individual schools at Rutgers that had her major (Arts and Sciences and SEBS), but no money. I believe I read the average score for the Honors College was about a 34/1530.
She got a lot of merit money+in the honors programs from Rowan, Stockton, University of Miami, Drexel, Kean and some others, so you shouldn’t have a difficult time finding a good amount of money if you look at the right places.
