where should I be looking?

I go to a competive public school In the same town as Hampshire College, University of Massachusetts, Smith College, Mount Holyoke, and Amherst College. 98% of the kids in my school go to college, while the other 2% travel. My school normally sends at least 8 kids to brown, 4 to yale and harvard, and a couple each to princeton, cornell, and Penn. Most of the students, however, go to 'little Ivies' like Williams, Vassar, Middlebury, Pomona, Macalester and Weslyan. In addition we generaly send 10 girls to Mt. holyoke, and 5 to Wellsley.
--as you can see my school has pretty good realtionships with colleges---

however, I am extremly worried.

My school doesnt offer nearly as many APs as a lot of the schools people in this forum go to. In addition my school doesn't rank class, or weight GPAs. (And it is pretty hard to get an A in most of the 'higher-end' classes!)

My Cummultive GPA currently (after 1st trimester of Jr year)is a mortifying and depressing 3.5999

my senior schedule for next year is :
AP BC Calc
AP bio
International Relations/Hon (Or Con Law honors if my schedule cant fit IR)
Holocoust/Hon
Adnvanced Spanish
AP american Lit
AP world Lit
Computer Graphics
-~~~in addition I will be taking Sociology at Amherst College

I have taken the hardest curriculum my school offers ( no free periods, my only electives were honors band and computer science, 2 langages[I took AP latin this year], All honors, and by the end of Senior year I will have taken all the AP's my school offers (AP euro, AP Latin, AP bio, Ap BC Calc, AP Eng language, Ap Lit,-i wish it was more-) other than French, Chinese, and German[which do not apply], and I will have taken an amherst college course in the field I wish to major in.)

I am taking SATs in 2 weeks (yikes!), but have been studying like mad, and have a tutor! (I am not a good test taker..so i hav to work at it a lot!) I am also planning on taking the Eng lang, Latin, and Euro APs this year. (My school, as metioned earlier doesn't allow APs untli junior year and it is a limited selection.)

My ECs are, in all modesty, the strongest part of my app. (I would list them if you want, but it is a long list.[not to worry- my 'passions' are pretty well-defined and i definitly have leadership roles and "quality"])- I hope this doesnt sound pretentious.

Here's my problem- I have no idea where I should apply! I like schools in or near cities. but i feel I can't get into any of the ones I like with my sucky GPA! (which is going up by the way) I was kind of thinking of Barnard ..(i hav alumna relations.) but I am not really sure.

I would really appreciate if people could give thier advice! (sorry for being so helpless)

edit- I forgot to mention I attended a leaderhip conference last summer, work at as a counslor at a camp and bunch of other stuff, this year i am hopefulling going to a college program to earn credit

When you get your SAT scores, list them with your GPA and your most important ECs, and then perhaps you'll be able to get some opinions. Right now, there isn't enough to go on. Besides, you might surprise yourself and do well on the SATs, which would expand your horizons considerably. And, a 3.6 GPA ain't bad. Really.

I'lll list SATS asap...my top ECs are
-Stage manger for theater co
-Props Mistress, and Costume Designer-Musical Theater Co
-Crew- coxswain
-National Honor Society
-Peer Tutor
-Lifeguard
-Littercy Program -mentor
- Flute -(10yrs)
- Photographer for local newspaper (I plan to submit a portfolio)

i think that's it for my favriote ECs..I volenteer several other place, participate in several other clubs, played differents sports fresh and soph year, and i have a bunch of summer ECs .Yet, those are my favriote, and the ones i am most likely to continue in College.

also ..i think i could probably somehow credit my low GPA (thanks ampton2x..u made me feel better) to the fact that in 10th grade my dad had a heartattack, my grandma died, and my grandpa was in the hospital in acoma for 5 months b/c of an angioplasty(sp) gone wrong!

well you don't want to "capitalize" on your family tragedies, [not implying that you were thinking of doing such a thing!] but if those experiences/ losses really moved you [which I think did, I mean, who wouldn't be affected, and quite frankly, depressed] I apologize.

3.6 ISN'T LOW. what the hell are you smoking????

3.6 UW meaning close to /above 4.0 weighted is a SOLID SOLID GPA.

it will definetly get you into Barnard, for gods sakes.

apply to some "ivy" collges. Try Columbia, Duke, Brown etc. as reaches, and some selective universities: Carnegie Mellon, Umich, BC, etc.

what are your SAT practice test scores? for the IVies I recommend above 2100 for sure, 2200 if you can make it.

for "very" selectives try above 2000 to be an average applicant- above that for admittance.

good luck with everything! [btw what do you want to major in, sorry if you mentioned it and I didn't catch it]

bye! :]

Thanks 'thebrown' - i wish i felt that way.. i want to major in sociology (thats why i am taking the course at amherst college) ..i would love to get into one of the 'ivies' or Northwestern or UniChicago...but ah..we'll see

also.. does anyone know how i configure a weighted gpa? I have taken all APs and Honors (as i mentioned before)

thanks for all your suggestions i will sure ppost my sats score as soon as i can...this forum is wicked helpful!! Any other advice would be much appreciated!

Each school has their own way of weighing grades, besdies colleges won't count it against you, if your school doesn't do WGPA.

I hate to see the kind of literacy assistance these people get....

It's a program for ELL (english language learners) ...for adults learning to read english who recently moved to the US

Its too hard to tell w/o scores.

Haha xorwat, that just made me crack up :)
