Where should I go as an accounting major?

Hello! Im in a bit of a pickle and was wondering if anyone could help guide me in the right direction. I am a student who originally went to a four year university studying Electrical Engineering. When I didnt like it I moved back home and started to study accounting. As I am looking at my options for transfer I dont see any UC that explicitly offers accounting as a degree. Is there a degree that correlates to accounting at most UC campuses? I would like to apply to both UC’s and CSU’s. Please let me know what major I should declare (to become an accountant) and which school its for! Thanks in advance!

I believe UCB, UCI and UCR have business schools that offer accounting degrees - they are very competitive for both freshman and transfer applicants so, they may not be appropriate transfer targets. Most CSUs have decent Accounting programs and are pretty accessible. Most are also well connected with their local business community so, if you know where you want to want to live/work after graduation, that can help you narrow the field.

What’s your GPA?

I have a 3.4 as a transfer student. I would prefer to live in the bay area if possible after graduation!

You can also study business economics at UCLA & UCSB as a path to becoming a CPA. Cal Poly SLO has an excellent accounting program and hires well into both So Cal & No Cal markets.

For CSU, you can’t go wrong with SDSU, Long Beach, Fullerton or Northridge (for So Cal). For No Cal consider SJSU, SFSU or Sonoma State (and probably a few others I’m not thinking about).

I agree, it generally behooves you to attend a school in the area in which you hope to work (with regards to CSUs for accounting).

With a 3.4, i think the UCs are probably out but UCR is worth a shot.

Since you want to live/work in the Bay, SJSU, SF State, East Bay and Sonoma should be top of your list. Sac and Chico are also recruiting targets for many bay area businesses.

Spend some time on each campus, apply to several, then pick your destination in April.

Good luck.

Isn’t accounting impacted at SFSU? I have a friend doing business and she’s having a nightmare getting her courses there because of impaction

Crowded vs impaction - you need to talk to current students. I haven’t been on-campus at SFSU in several years so, I and don’t know any current students but, right now, with most CSUs, classes are pretty available. You might not like the times they are offered and the professor might not be your first choice but, a motivated, flexible student can get a seat in a class they need.

My son is a Sr Biz major at Chico, that’s been his experience there. I spoke to a Sac State student yesterday who reported the same.

Funny enough, impaction is simply the school declaring that there are more qualified applicants than there are seats so, they begin to raise admission standards - it actually reduces crowding.

Ah I misunderstood.
Either way I checked
http://www.sfsu.edu/future/apply/impacted.html#majorimpact
And it looks like the Accounting concentration is impacted AND it seems like it’s crowded. I’m not saying don’t apply, just wanted them to be aware.

You can also study accounting at UCSC under management econ.

For UCLA, major is Bus. Eco. and minor in Accounting.
