I was admitted to UC Irvine for Biology major, instead of nursing, and I was also admitted to CSULB (Cal State Long Beach) for pre-nursing major. I’m still waiting on Fullerton’s waitlist offer right now. If I was rejected from Fullerton (this is my last chance to a direct-admit nursing program), should I go to UC Irvine as bio major and change my majors after I finish my pre-reqs, or should I go to Long Beach for their pre-nursing major?
Please give me as much advice as possible!!!
@Gumbymom could you give me some advice
@Banker1 could you also give me some advice
Here is information for UCI and changing into the Nursing major.

Fall 2018 transfer applicants: 98
Fall 2018 transfer admissions: 17 (17% admitted)

CSULB Pre-Nursing to Nursing information:
http://web.csulb.edu/colleges/chhs/departments/nursing/docs/FAQ09-20-16.pdf
I cannot find any 2017 data for Nursing school applicants for CSULB but here is data from 2016 and back:
https://web.csulb.edu/colleges/chhs/departments/nursing/docs/PoolStatsSpring2016initial.pdf
Just remember that Pre-Nursing at CSULB does not guarantee you a spot and either does being a UCI undergrad.
@Gumbymom I have three options right now so far.
- CSUF - get admission as a direct admit (certain)
- UCI - go in as bio then change majors (not certain)
- CSULB - go in as pre-nursing then reapply (not certain)
- Go to community college and transfer to nursing BSN programs
what do you think is the best option for me right now?
Go for the direct admit if accepted off the waitlist since the other 3 options are not guaranteed.
@Gumbymom Opps!! I meant to add which is the best option if I didn’t get off the waitlist. thank you so much for the reply!
The best option if not admitted off the waitlist would be really up to you. You need to decide where you can get a competitive GPA and nursing experience if you plan to transfer. Community college might the easiest option but getting courses can be difficult due to overcrowding.
There is one other option and that is to take a Gap year and reapply to a wider variety of Nursing programs especially out of state. Arizona state has a very good direct admit Nursing program and so do some of the Oregon and Washington schools. @Banker1 could probably help you find a wider range of schools in which to apply.
@Gumbymom Thank you so much for your advices!! and @Banker1 any advice would be greatly appreciated!
I think you’ve done a good job of summarizing your options. One more option that you haven’t listed is
5. Take a Gap year and apply more broadly even OOS to direct entry nursing schools as an incoming freshman F2019.
During your gap you could volunteer at hospitals, work, travel. I can tell you about the schools where we applied this year and what we’ve found out especially during visits. But I don’t necessarily think that option is best for you.
Do everything you can to show CSUF that you are interested and ready to accept that offer should you come off the waitlist there. Visit CSULB and inquire about the pre-Nursing program and your realistic chances of later being admitted into their program. You could do the same for UCI (the acceptance rate for transfer students provided above doesn’t look insurmountable.
@Banker1 @Gumbymom Hello! thank you both for giving me advices. I just got rejected from Fullerton
I did some research and I saw that San Bernardino has a guaranteed acceptance for nursing!
https://nursing.csusb.edu/guaranteedAdmission.htm
I do meet all the requirements listed on their website, except for the TEAS test. It says that I have to pass the TEAS test with a 70% before Fall 2018 admission by April 1st. Do you guys know if the test is for this year or next year? I will call them tomorrow to ask but if you know, please reply to me.
I was also wondering , if I go to UCI and take the pre-requisites for nursing, what will happen if I get rejected for change of major request? Will I be too behind on my bio major requirements if I decide to continue for bio major?
And can I also apply to other nursing programs with the pre-reqs that I took from UCI or is it not transferrable to the CSUs?
I’m sorry for asking too many questions, but if you guys can give me some advice, I will be greatly appreciated!
- How I am reading the CSUSB’s guaranteed Nursing program is that you have to be admitted to CSUSB for Fall Quarter 2018 as a Pre-Nursing student, take the required pre-req courses with the minimum GPA, pass the TEAS and then you would be admitted into the program starting Fall 2019 Sophomore year.
Did you apply to CSUSB for Pre-Nursing and were you accepted for Fall 2018? If not, then you will have to take a Gap Year and reapply for Fall 2019.
-
You can take the Nursing pre-req courses at UCI but since you are not a Nursing admit, you will not be given priority for these pre-req courses. You could then apply to UCI Nursing school along with several other Nursing schools during Sophomore to see if you are accepted. You would have to check with each school that you plan to apply to see if UCI’s courses would be transferable.
-
If you are not accepted, you could then continue to finish your Biology degree at UCI and then consider a Post-Bac Nursing program.
Yes I got into CSUSB for pre-nursing
On the UCI nursing website for change of major students, they listed the classes I need to take for pre-reqs on the path to nursing program, and they said if I’m a bio major, I’ll be given priority for these classes.
More about CSUSB and Pre-Nursing:
Pre-Nursing
Applicants to Nursing majors must submit an application within the initial filing period for fall 2018. All applicants are encouraged to identify an alternate major on their admission application. Transcripts of all coursework completed and other required documents must be submitted to Office of Admissions & Student Recruitment by July 1, 2018. The Pre-Nursing and Nursing major admission is only available for students who are California residents.
Admission of first-time freshmen to Nursing majors will be based on the eligibility index (EI) which is determined by a combination of SAT or ACT test scores and high school grade point average, and also on grades in laboratory science courses. A minimum SAT EI of 3920 or ACT EI of 938 (alternative SAT EI of 3500 or an alternative ACT EI of 840) and a 3.0 GPA in laboratory science courses is required for admission.
Admission of upper-division transfers to Nursing majors will be based on transferable grade point average and completion of prerequisite coursework. A minimum of 3.50 GPA is required, and a minimum grade of “C” is required in each of the following courses with an overall GPA of 3.00: Oral Communication (A1), Written Communication (A2), Critical Thinking (A3), BIOL 220, BIOL 223 or 224, CHEM 205, and MATH 165 or acceptable Statistics.
Well that is good know about getting the classes at UCI. My advice is always go for the direct admit and since you got into Pre-Nursing at CSUSB with a guaranteed admission if you pass the TEAS, this seems like the best route if Nursing is your #1 choice. Employers will not care if you get your BSN from CSUSB or from UCI, your job skill set will be most important.
@Gumbymom Thank you so much for the information and your advices!!! I really appreciate it! You’ve been very helpful to me
@Gumbymom hi! one more question. If I don’t get into UCI nursing for change of major, will my graduation be delayed if I continue to finish for bio major?
