Summer 2004 swim team, not that important or prestigous but I had fun

I am hoping to make it into NHS, I think I have a really good chance.

How about Emory? Right in your backyard...

Do you really think I have a chance there??? :o !

I didn't think it was even close.

You need to study your butt off for the SAT and get it up about 100 pts, and somehow bring class rank up over the next few semesters to top 15% and you might have a shot. Your ECs are pretty good. It is a big reach, but worth a shot ED if you can do this. Emory Oxford you are a shoo-in, but the lack of a social life the first two years wouldnt work for me personally.

Otherwise what kind of schools are you looking for? UGA is a pretty decent state school so are you looking for a smaller LAC type place?

No, I just wanted to know what schools are inbetween UGA and Emory and akind of at home. Further way is fine too.

What do you want to major in? Just to throw out a few to look into: Tulane, Vanderbilt, Davidson, Washington University, NYU, GW, BU.

Is your rank weighted?

Mercer(might get merit money), Furman, Wofford, College of Charleston, Samford, B'ham-Southern, UNC-Asheville, Elon, FSU - a variety of close to you with a variety of selectivites - mostly smaller than UGA or Emory.

yeah the rank is weighted, the school does not rank unweighted GPA.
Thanks for the ideas, I probably want to do accounting then get a MBA.

How hard is it to get into NYU and/or the UGA honors program?

I know Fellowship of founders is near immpossible to achieve.

UGA is a good safety right for me right? or am I wrong?

You might take a look at Emory's Oxford College program. With your current GPA and SATs, it would be close to a safety. After two years at the Oxford campus, you finish up at Emory's main campus. I know many enjoy the Oxford experience because it has the feel and benefits of a small LAC but then you get the benefits of the larger University for your last two years. It is possible to apply to both Emory and Oxford at the same time. http://www.emory.edu/OXFORD/

A few other options might be Tulane, U of Miami, Sewanee (U of the South), Furman in SC and Rhodes in Tenn. The last four would be solid matches for you, Tulane a realistic reach.

Would anticipate acceptance at UGA but not honors. How about Richmond?

I know oxford really really well and honestly its nothing like a LAC (sorry carolyn). A LAC usually provides ample social outlets (whether dorm parties or house parties.) Oxford feels much more like a really boring summer camp than a LAC. There is NO drinking (since on campus no one is 21), and it doesnt have the community feel since everyone goes home on weekends. My brother went there thinking it would be LACish, and it was nothing like the experiences I have had at LACs. I wouldnt recommend the place unless you are the type who just wants to go to school to study then go home on the weekends.

I think you might look at Wake Forest. Its an easier admit than emory and close to your ballpark. Also perhaps Boston University, Boston College, Tufts. As for LACs: Hamilton, Colby, Colgate, Bucknell, Macalester, Trinity, and Holy Cross. These are all great schools, look for what fits you best.

yeah, I knew that LAC were not for me and after looking at thier websites, I know I don't want to go to these schools. They are too small. They might offer great education but I don't want to go there because there is not enough people.

Tulane looks promising, I will probably take a closer look in the coming weeks.

So my list looks like this so far:
Emory (ED, I am going to try, I am not going to know if I don't)
UGA
Ga tech (bussiness)
Tulane?

oldman, why can't I get into the UGA honors program? Is it that hard to get in?

I hear that if you do well at an decent school like UGA, then you can go to somewhere famous for grad school? So in actuality the undergrad school name is not as important as doing well in it. See if you make it to the top of an OK undergrad (UGA) then it looks much better then to make only the 50% percentile of lets say Duke. Is it better to be on top of the hill or in the middle of a mountain?

Actually, I agree with Slippers assessment of Oxford (please no flames from Oxford students!) but thought I'd toss it in the mix. And, yes, UGA would be fine to get you into any graduate school assuming you do well in terms of grades and test scores. However, I am a big believer in having a safety that you absolutely would love to go to if you're only going to have one safety. If you love UGA, then it's fine to have only one safety. However, I'd also recommend you add a few solid matches on your current list.

It depends. It sounds crazy but as long as you can do reasonably well at a place like Duke you WILL go to a top school, especially in business. I see my friends (from Dartmouth) with 3.2-3.4s getting into top ten business schools everyday. It also is relatively normal for an Ivy 3.7-3.8 to get into a top 10 med school, but its crazily difficult to go from a random state school. That said, if you do extremely well from UGA, you can go anywhere.

Check out Wake, its a prestige notch above the others (Tulane, Ga Tech) and you have a decent chance.

The kids I know at Georgia in the honors program have SAT's 1400+ and top 10% class rank. You may well qualify but it seems to me a stretch.

Might look at Holy Cross, Bowdoin, or Richmond. Holy Cross has a nice location -1 hour from Boston and HC has well repected classics/Latin major.

Def Emory. My cousin went there- its awesome. You would def be able to get into NYU. Do you want to go far? What about University of Florida, I know that is more competitive than FSU. Or Bucknell, if you want to travel more up North- it's a beautiful campus, or like Lehigh or Lafayette. You could also do BU, if you are into the city thing, but don't want NY. Plus BU would prob be a safety for you. If you wanted something in Washington I would recommend GWU (would be a definite safety) and Georgetown. If you want more towards the Midwest/West/South I would go for UT- Austin, or University of Wisconsin- Madison (those schools are on my list- so I am a fan).

Listen: You have really good stats (you should be proud), and you obviously aren't a couch potato- just do your research on different schools. Since you know what you want to major in it's easier to narrow down. Then once you have done that decide if you want a big or small campus, urban or rural, North, West or close to home.

After you have done a mini-research on what you want, go to the library and get one of those fat college books and read up on the ones you picked, and decide what you like. With your stats you definitly have a lot to choose from. I wish you luck.

Just a question, don't you have parents to help you figure out what colleges...or like a guidance counselor or something?

Anyways GOOD LUCK~ where ever you decide to apply I am sure you will get in. Just don't wrapped up in the idea that you need to apply to an IVY league school. They are overratted in my book.

~shopgirl243

Yeah, life does not revole round going to a Ivy League. As much as some people would like it.
UGA is my perfect safety, I would be fine going there because:
1.Hope makes it cost very low
2. The campus looks nice
3. If you get into the honors program, the teachers are screened every year
4. Bussiness program is good there

Thanks guys and gals, I have my preliminary list now!!! I will probably be back on what are my chances? when this school year ends:)!

Emory is slightly overrated, IMO. Wake and Davidson are not only easier to get into, but better schools.
Check out the New College of Florida too. It's an awesome LAC in NCF with a lot of prestige among buisness/law/medical/graduate schools.
