Where Should I Go: SUNY Binghamton or Geneseo??

Well, I got accepted to both these schools a few weeks ago and haven't been able to make up my mind. If anyone of you can help me out that'd be great.

First off, I'm an accounting major, so whichever school is better in that respect is a priority... and I assume that's Binghamton? Especially since they seem to work closely with PwC (big 4 accounting firm) and I'd probably want my CPA and to work there after college. I live 45 minutes outside of NYC, so am probably going to be living at home and working there after school. However, not sure if I'm going to be in NY the rest of my life... so the fact that Binghamton also might be more recognizable elsewhere could matter. However, by the time I leave it's probably safe to assume that all places will care about is my job experience and what not, right?

So everything I mentioned above is an issue... and I'm kinda leaning towards Binghamton there. The next issue I have with the schools is the distance from home. Now, it's not a big deal to be close to home, but a 5 hour or so drive is annoying (Geneseo) and don't feel like flying home either. Binghamton is roughly 2 hours from where I live... so I could easily come home whenever.

The only thing that makes me want to go to Geneseo is that everyone that goes loves it and it is a nice place. While Binghamton everyone hates because of the depressing buildings, ****ty weather and supposively annoying people (altohugh I've met only nice people from there). I haven't visited Binghamton, which I need to this weekend or next weekend I guess (was really sick during the acceptance day they held), but could it be that bad? I'm not a crazy partier anyway, so if it's because of that I don't care. I just don't see what could be so wrong with the place.

Also, just curious about teaching staff and all of that and which school shines in that area because good professors and everything is really good.

Anyway, just any other advice on the two schools I could get and ANY help or opinions. It's a hard choice and dunno what to do and gotta decide pretty soon.

Thanks for everyone who read this far, I realize it was a tad bit long, lol.

Really, everything you've said leans towards Binghamton, except for the happiness of the students. The only way to confirm student happiness is to visit the campus and judge for yourself, or do what you've already done and talk to students at each school. I think you couldn't go wrong with either school. Binghamton does have very strong ties to PwC, something very attractive to an accounting major.

If you're deciding on the mere factor of major, pick Binghamton. I assume you're in school of managment? SOM is top notch. Harpur College is annoying. So if it's Harpur College, don't bother... I don't know anything about the accounting major though.

If you're set on "loving" the school you'll eventually transfer to: Geneseo. Small and nuturing is how i'll describe it, but you won't necessarily receive the prestige that is Binghamton's business/accounting programs. Geneseo is also pretty much rural farm land.

If you're not a big partier... there's not much to do at binghamton, I can tell you that much.

In the end, it's pretty much up to you... as long as you find the right niche for yourself, you'll do well at Bing. (finding the right study groups, motivated students.) You don't want to make friends with the unmotivated/jaded ones that got rejected from Cornell, they're miserable and it'll make you depressed as well.

Well, think I'll go to Binghamton... mainly because I think it'll set me on a better path after college. And college is only 2 more years for me, so I think I'll pick a better life after college over the possible better 2 years of college.

Plus, it's still a tossup whether or not I'll even dislike Binghamton... and considering I'm usually fine with whatever I'm doing, I think I'll enjoy it.

I don't think there is much to do other than part at ANY school, so Geneseo probably falls there too (at least that's what my friends who go there seem to do all the time).

And I'm not set on "loving" the school. It's really the one thing that Geneseo has going for it, but I just don't think that's me. I'll take practical over that any day.

The only problem is if Binghamton is really so horrible it'll suck my life away and be a completely horrible experience. I don't think that'll happen, but it's a small possiblity I guess? Who knows... I'll visit and see, but probably going to go there anyway.

The SOM is great and the fact that they can definitely be very helpful when it comes to landing a job... that is really priceless.

Like I said, I MIGHT (because I might have a great time at Bing) and think about it might have been very fun to go to Geneseo and what not. However, job placement after college and my career and onwards will have a greater impact on my entire life... I think that's far more important.

It's one of the reasons I don't understand why anyone would screw up the rest of their life with 100k debt to go to their "dream" school when they go to a state school and come out with 20k or less debt or something. I just don't think four years of your life can really be that great to justify influencing the rest of your life to such a great degree... whatever though.

Anyway, thanks for responses, more opinions/advice still welcome.

Bumping this back up...

no one said anything about you choosing a state school .... =x

everyone has their own preference, to each his own.

I think you already made up your choice about Binghamton, just send in the deposit already :P
