Hey I would really appreciate some advice theres noone in my life that I can really talk to about my college options. (dont have a dad, my mom is very lazy, my high school guidance counselor is a joke) I am currently living in Fayetteville, Arkansas in 12th grade and I have a GPA of 3.8~3.9. Im ranked 2nd in my class. I got an 1850 on the SAT, I hate the SAT i couldnt concentrate. I got a 31 on the ACT though. Can I translate my act score to an sat score? anyway,i will most likely have at least a 700 on my math 2 chemistry and physics subject tests. My mom is a single mother who doesnt receive child support and she has NO money saved for my college fund. and im half-mexican. I could get a full ride scholarship here at u of A but i HATE arkansas i have so much emotional pains tied to this place and i just wanna go far far away from here for college, plus its totally a party school. I'd love to go to college at UT Austin engineering but they dont give a crap about out-of-staters right? Im thinking Georgia Tech maybe? Anyone know any good chemical engineering schools I may make it into? Please help, I have noone else to help me with this decision, Thank you.

Why not check out Agnes Scott (all women) in GA?
You could probably get merit aid & they embrace diversity.

You would probably be in the best position if you look at private colleges that meet 100% of need. Google “colleges that meet 100% of need” for a list. Being Hispanic, low income, from a single parent household and from an underrepresented state will make you very attractive to top colleges with your rank and ACT. You would have a great shot at harvard and other very top schools. Good luck!

Congratulations on your high achievements despite a difficult situation.

Check out the [College Admissions - SAT - University & College Search Tool](http://www.collegeboard.com) website for colleges that offer the most need based aid. Look under each college, and then click financial aid. You should apply to a range of colleges so you can compare financial aid.

Many colleges offer admissions fee waivers to lower income persons, and the College board also offers some fee waivers for SATs and for financial aid submittals.

A person often finds that they receive the most offer of merit based aid from a college where they will be in the top 15% of the applicant pool. Therefore, for financial reasons, it may make sense to consider a college that is more of an admissions safety vs. a reach.

There are a number of colleges that like to brag that they have students from 50 states. Those colleges (particularly in northern and western states) may offer some preference to a student from Arkansas. Also, colleges with fewer Latino students are more likely to give preference to a Latino applicant.

Before you apply to an out of state public school, you need to consider how much that college gives admissions preference to students from their own state. Some colleges (such as UNC Chappel Hill) make it very hard for out of state students to be admitted, while some (such as Penn State) treat them the same.

Your ACT score and your GPA put you in range for merit aid at a number of places. Read through http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/848226-important-links-automatic-guaranteed-merit-scholarships.html and then take a look at some of the other threads in the Financial Aid Forum for more ideas.

SupahTofu - what is your SAT breakdown? Colleges weigh the SAT and ACT equally, and a 31 ACT is equal to 1360-1390 CR+M.

Will you be a 1st generation college student? If so, this will really help, along with everything else you mentioned in your post.

Also, for Engineering, take a look at the following schools, where you have a good shot at merit aid:

Tulane
Northeastern
Milwaukee School of Engineering
Rensselear Polytechnic Institute
Syracuse
Villanova
Bucknell
Drexel
Seattle U.

You need to take some time to figure out what else you want out of college, beyond Engineering. Do you want large, small, urban, suburban, cold, hot, close to home, far from home, etc.? It will be easier to narrow it down and select schools with strong aid once you figure out what sort of college experience you want.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

Take a look at University of Tulsa.

Thank you for your help!! Good info! Also, do you think I should retake my SAT?

It couldn’t hurt, especially if you take the time to prep for it. At this point, your only option is the Dec SAT. The worst that could happen is you don’t perform well and you end up using your 31 ACT in your applications (not a bad score at all). That 700 Math 2 score tells me you’d improve, with a little bit of prep.

Good luck!

You shouldn’t worry about translating your ACT into an SAT score, all schools accept the ACT. And 31 is a good score. I would only send the ACT. You should look at Vanderbilt as well. If you are accepted I believe they have a program for low income students like yourself that guarantees no loans. I think Tulane has the same thing for families making under $70,000 or something like that. There are others, but those are 2 that have chemical engineering. I think you would get into Tulane for sure, Vandy you have a good shot.
