Where Should I go? Umichi or Univ of Washington

Hi there,

I got ads from aerospace program in both Umich (master) and UW (PhD). The deadline is approaching and I really don't know which one will fit me better.

I knew that Umich has a better ranking and more professors in my interest area.
But UW has a great location, not too hot or too cold. And there is one professor that I have contacted with, but her lab is full now.
Anyway, can anyone help me out?

I’m not in your field, but I would say UMich is the wiser choice. If you were forced into a lab at UW that didn’t interest you or wasn’t a good fit, that would be a LONG 5-6 years. It sounds like UMich has several opportunities for you to explore that would still be winthin your interests. Plus, after your Masters the UW prof might have an position for you…
Also, Ann Arbor has good weather a couple months of the year :)

“better ranking and more professors in my interest area.”

Ummm…what was the question again and why?

Oh I was trying to say that Umich ranks the 6th in the aerospace engineering. And the department has 6 professors doing dynamics and control which is I am interested in.
University of Washington has 3 professors in control. It seems Washington has less projects going on than Michigan. However, I like the town, Seattle, better than Ann Arbor. I can’t decide now.

Yes, you’ve restated your question.

Read the part I quoted and figure out why you’re bothering to ask.

What town you like better versus what’s best for your professional development is the kind of non-starter question I’d expect a parent to ask.

short: Go with Michigan.

I agree with the last post. Realistically, you probably won’t have a ton of time outside of class, studying, and the lab. With the time you do have, Ann Arbor offers LOTS of great activities!

Everyone around me told me that I should go with Michigan. I see what the point is. I would say so. Michigan is a better choice for me. Thanks guys for all your reply.

If it makes you feel better, Ann Arbor has more sunny days than Seattle. Also, umich aerospace program is extremely well known. I think one of the NASA missions was composed of only umich grads heh. One of them donated a rock from the moon to umich.
