URM: Shoot for the moon.

Where do you want to go location-wise? Do you want a large university or a smaller place? Urban, suburban, rural, or any? You have a great class rank, solid and consistent scores in testing, and really good ECs. You are going to have plenty of options, so think about your own hopes and preferences.

Apply for the Gates Scholarship. Where do you want to go?

Well, I am mostly concentrating on the Northeastern section of the country. I was thinking along the lines of:

Reach:
Cornell
Carnegie-Mellon

Target:
Johns Hopkins
New York University

Safety:
Rutgers - New Brunswick (In-State) -- NJ Boy! :-P
University of MD

But I'd love to hear your suggestions... Honestly, the school size... I would go for not extremely small, and not huge either. The environment really doesn't bother me.

As for scholarships, I am applying to Gates already. Any other suggestions?

Thank you so much for your input! It is greatly appreciated!

bump bump bump

I'd think that you'd be alright with your safeties...but John Hopkins is difficult to get into. Better put that in your reach column.

NYU is a good school in a really cool environment, goodluck, you have a decent shot.

your targets want sat scores around 2100?!? esp JHU...i got a 2070 and im probably not applying because its too much of a reach

I think that given your URM status, your school list is pretty much on track. I believe JHU is a bit harder to get into than NYU but am not sure. I was not aware that Carnegie Mellon was harder to get into than NYU or JHU. I think you really stand an excellent chance at all the schools you applied to, though Cornell is in the reach category.

cmu isnt harder to get into than nyu or jhu... i would say that cmu should be a high match and jhu and nyu slight reaches
