Where Should I Go?

So here’s the deal:
I want to be a Music Producer and, ideally, I want to stay in music related states (Cali, Miami, Atlanta, and etc.) I’ve been searching a long time across the internet but it seems that all the music colleges that suit me. I want a college similar to Berklee college in Boston or Indiana University’s music school. Don’t get me wrong, if all else fails I’d go to one of those colleges but like I said earlier, I want to go somewhere that music can be found; Miami as UMF and LA is just the home of entertainment (Coachella, HARD, TomorrowLand etc.) PLEASE HELP! To sum it up, I’m asking for a UNIVERSITY (please no community colleges) in a music centralized state (California, Florida, Georgia) that suits my goal to be a Music Producer meaning a college with maybe a studio and Majors that involve music technology. Once again, I’m begging, PLEASE HELP!

Check out Full Sail University.

Why is Atlanta more relevant to music than NYC?

Do tell. What are the music related states? Would Tennessee count? You didn’t list that one. What about OH? That’s where funk started. What can your family afford? If you can afford a lot then there are many schools open to you.

@lalalemma Not saying Atlanta is necessarily more relevant than NYC, but the rap scene is really blowing up there. I believe Childish Gambino is currently making a documentary/miniseries about the booming music scene in Atlanta right now.

You need to go where the programs are, not where you feel the best music scenes are. Or, if you stick to the scenes you like, you’ll have to sacrifice the quality of the programs you’re seeking. I did a cursory search and found what you already have: the best programs for music production seem to be Berklee in Boston and Indiana + a bunch of other schools that are not in your target cities (including a shady for profit!). FWIW, Boston is hardly lacking a music scene (there are some great clubs & almost all major music acts + great indie acts roll through Boston), it’s just not a center of record production. But Berklee is famous worldwide for it’s programs, so it’s more or less the gold standard school to go to for music careers.

If what matters most to you is being by the best concerts (I mean, why else mention Coachella?) and having year-round internship access (as opposed to just summer access), then you’ll have to work backwards: search the sites of schools in Los Angeles, Atlanta and Miami and see what their music departments are like. Most major schools will certainly have music programs, but they’ll be theory, history & performance based. They’re unlikely to have a specialized music production program, however. If the program matters most, you won’t be in sexy locations… you should also look at Nashville, btw, which is a major music scene and has some amazing schools, as well.

Two renowned Music Business/Production programs, in great music cities, are Loyola-NOLA and Drexel. I’ve heard that Belmont, in Nashville, is good, but they are also a conservative Christian college which might not suit you. Columbia College Chicago is a terrific safety for anyone interested in arts and media. I don’t know how strong they are in Music Business, but they can’t be terrible. UArts, in Philly, has a relatively new major in Music Business, Entrepreneurship, and Technology (but Drexel is probably still better). University of Miami must have something. I don’t know about Emory or Georgia Tech. I suspect one of the historically-black colleges in Atlanta would have strong connections to the Hip-Hop community. I think that Loyola Marymount , USC, and UCLA probably all have opportunities, even if they don’t have majors.

When do you want to be a music producer? When you’re 22? Do you play? What’s wrong with getting a grounding in theory or performance in undergrad?

Please don’t. There’s no reason to go with a for-profit university when there are plenty of regionally-accredited (that’s important, more important than you might realize!) non-profits out there to choose from.

I did but realized they didn’t have dorms and that really bugs me.

I do play Saxophone but I’m just playing to look good to colleges. I already make a little bit of music but I need a better laptop. I wanna get signed to label BEFORE I finish college.

“A music related state” was a terrible way to put what I meant. What I meant was somewhere where electronic music is easy to be discovered or where I can meet people. It’d be easier to meet someone in LA than in

If you’re into EDM, give Boston a more thorough and considered look. There is absolutely an EDM scene there and you’d be able to find “your people.” I did a cursory look and found that Boston has an EDM society, and I know they also have monthly Bootie remix parties.

What are your stats? It’ll be easier to recommend schools in the other places you mentioned if we know what your stats are. Oh, and financial considerations, too. ie: can you afford out of state tuition for UCs, etc.

I am most definitely into EDM and what do you mean by stats and financiallyyy um i don’t know. Nothing too expensive like nothing too far over 16-17,000 and I kinda want 4 year institutions please. I at least want my bachelors

What Is your GPA and SAT or ACT scores? That is what the poster means. Also, can you pay $17,000 per year for 4 years? You can only borrow about $31,000 yourself so are you parents paying for college? How much?

The normal borrowing limit is $28K over four years. The $31K limit is an aggregate for all years.

Like Andrew Wiggins. :-?

I’m only a Freshman

I think we all assumed you were a Junior!
Concentrate on your music and grades and that way you will have some good choices in a few years.

Yeahh. But I REALLY wanna start early so I know ahead if time.

Austin TX has the U of Texas and NYU has a program that might be of interest, but you would have to look it up.
