I’m currently a junior wit a 3.93 UW GPA and 1400/1600 projected New SAT. I’m interested in business/finance and really like NYU but hate the cost. Do you know any schools that are similar to NYU that are good in my major but at a lower cost?
State?
New York
Baruch, Buffalo, Albany, Binghamton? Possibly Syracuse with a merit scholarship?
What is it about NYU that you like. It is hard to know what schools to compare NYU to if you have not made it clear what about NYU is attractive. It does not really have a campus so it is not really NYU centric. In other words, there isn’t a hard core NYU center where you run into everyone and where NYU identity is endorsed-little to no school spirit but NY really defines the experience. Is that what you want to find in other less expensive schools? If not, what is so compelling to you about NYU. Once that is made clear, people can suggest other schools where those things also exist…
If you want NYC, but want affordable, Fordham should be considered.
What’s your parents’ budget? What’s your EFC (if different from budget)?
Would you consider applying to Macaulay and Baruch?
Aren’t you cutting it close on taking the SAT at this point?
I’m only a junior, so I haven’t done anything for applications yet
Not like NYU, but Birmingham has a great program. There are also many private U’s that will give you good merit aid. Miami and Tulane come to mind. I’m sure there are others.
I agree Fordham is a bit similar to NYU, although I wouldn’t call it affordable!
What about NYU do you like?
I love the fact of living in the City and I want to major in finance which NYU is consistently high ranked in, also good alumni network and job availability, it is a little big but class size is still reasonable which is more important to me than overall size, I haven’t looked into any school in depth yet but NYU is currently the school at the top of my list but I don’t think I can pay for it
Since no one won the current Powerball, no one can pay full pay at NYU.
^Unfortunately, too many get into debt for it.
@1zogden1: run the NPC. If it’s unaffordable, keep it on your list but not at the top.
Do you like NYC or would cities such as Philadelphia or Boston work? What about Pittsburgh, Cincinnati… or Chicago or Minneapolis-St Paul?
@1zogden, Ask your parents how much they can pay. I see you have several threads asking about scholarships. The best ones come from the colleges. There aren’t enough outside scholarships available to cover $70k/year for 4 years. Most are only a few hundred dollars and are only for one year. You can borrow the federal student loan (~$5500/year), so if your parents can’t contribute much you need to look for low cost schools and/or those that offer merit. Run some Net Price Calculators (on the school websites) to get an idea how much they’d cost your family.
What can your family afford, though?
Income bracket is probably 100k to 120k but I’m a twin and have a 1 year younger brother so I get 1/3 of the help from my parents
Well, first identify your affordable safeties…schools that you KNOW that you have all costs covered…then apply elsewhere.
NYU will not likely be affordable…not even close.
You need to focus on meet-need colleges, because they’ll take your twin situation into account. Colleges that don’t meet need, won’t.

The twin thing will help. Since you are only juniors now, take a good look at finances. I believe it will be this year’s tax return that will be used for FAFSA and CSS next year. You might ask your parents to consult with their accountant now re: things that can be done to maximize aid.
I also suggest Fordham. Gabelli Business School is very good, and with top scores you could get merit aid. You might also look at American University and GW in DC. Possible merit there, too, especially AU. Or look at Northeastern in Boston. We didn’t find merit offered was enough, but were intrigued by their co-op program. Our kids have friends attending for business who like it a lot. If you’re 100% set on business, look at Bentley and Babson, too.
Really good that you’re starting to think about all of this NOW. Plan a few visits over spring break. Seeing the campuses helps. Good luck.
