hey i'm interested in majoring in theater- help me find theater reach schools, matches, and safeties ( i know that's tough because it depends on talent) but you know harder to get in....easiest. etc.
school wise. i'm top of my class, straight a's, 2110 sat, sat 2's us history 750, math 1c 700, ap us history and chem were 4's.
thanks!

You can't JUST say you want to major in theater - that leaves it open to ALOT of different majors... Are you interested in BFA programs in Acting, Musical Theatre, Directing, Design? or general BA programs in Theatre Studies? We need at least that much info before we can give suggestions!

i meant to say drama (acting) alot of schools refer to such a major just as theater/theater arts/drama so i apologise

in that case you should check out the theatre/drama thread under arts majors. most of the good bfa acting schools got mentioned there over the last year. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=63432

OK, I'll bite.
Top Schools for acting (BFA/BA)
Juilliard
USC
SMU
Tisch
Catholic Univeristy
BU
CMU
Northwestern
Evansville
Indianna
UCLA
Royal Academy
Cal State Fullerton
DePaul

woops. I forgot NCSA

I noted your list of top schools for acting includes USC. While my S is primarily interested in MT, our family has ties to California and professional links to USC so I've been a bit sad to see that 'SC doesn't really have a place in the MT pantheon. With their strong music school, that seems a missed opportunity. Do you know whether a BFA Acting at USC with some electives taken in the music school's courses in the MT minor would be a reasonable compromise? (This may require taking an additional year or semester to complete, I realize, since the Acting BFA is pretty packed.) Or, should we just keep our focus on the "normal" top tier MT schools: CMU, CCM, UM, BOCO, Tisch, etc.?

Thanks for any insights you may have.

Remember, there is no sure fire way to make a go at this business. What are your son's goals? A BFA in MT doesn't guarantee success. He needs to study where he will learn the most.

My area of knowledge is rooted in straight acting, so I don't post as an authority on MT. I have had some experience with students appplying to MT. This year I had CMU, Elon, BoCo and Webster acceptances in MT. So, I am learning what works.

I think you should consider USC in addition to the other schools mentioned (add OCU, CCM, UM) and also be sure to have some safetys! The competition is fierce
And I hope your son has good grades and SATs. Admissions to USC is tough.

But, to answer your question, I would go for the BA at USC with continuing studies in voice/dance on the side. The BA program at USC has tremendous integrity. And not all universities who offer both degrees do.
The BAs have shows that the BFA students cannot audition for, and they are not sticking you in a blackbox somewhere in the basement. These are mainstage productions with season ticket subscribers.
Also, I believe the musical (or they may do two) is open for both the BA and BFA students. Maybe someone else will know more specifics.

Best of luck!

Oh, my CC DTs have gotten the better of me and I suppose I can be useful here, so Ill chime in. Heres a list of American schools to look at roughly divided into categories:

Thebo, true to your fashion to be this helpful and resourceful. It was worth coming "out" again. You've helped many. I want to wish you all the best as you embark on your college adventure!!
Susan

Add CCM Drama to your conservatory list/Elite BFA . Add Williams College to the Elite BA list. It is credited with a respected theater dept; very heavily endowed. Construction is almost complete on a new Theater complex. I've also heard that Bard has a fabulous new theater. Drew, in NJ also is a nice small BA theater school. They offer an acting semester in London.

Thesbohemian, Thanks for the concise list! Is Syracuse left off deliberately? It is on S audition list.

Yes, yes, yes! Great list.
And I would add Syracuse and Elon to one catagory or another and...take off Rutgers from "elitie". Just my opinion

please add UCLA to your son's list of California schools. They do have a musical theatre track after Soph. year.

Good to hear your "voice" thesbo! You are missed!

OH my YES! If you want to get into all that, there's Sarah Lawrence, Bennington, CCM drama and BARD!!!! My Lordy, Bard's performing arts facility was designed by non other than Frank Gehry, one of the most famous contemporary achitects in the world! He designed the Guggenheim in Bilbao, Spain amoung about a zillion others.
Also, on staff at Bard is the famed Joanne Ackalitis (sp?). Bard is VERY left of center and just what the doctor ordered for certain actors. A beautiful if rural campus and close to the city. Quite expensive

Syracuse has a competitve BFA Acting and I believe they offer a BA as well in a conservatory based setting and AMDA in NYC has a "mentionable" program.

Bump., good list with good categories
