I’m going to be in COM this coming fall, but I didn’t really get to check out the dorms when I visited. For my housing info i put 1) Warren 2) The Towers 3) 575 commonwealth ave. 4) shelton hall 5) myles standish…

I know everyone says Warren is loud, and not that nice, but great for freshman to meet friends, so I’ll probably keep that as my #1…what is 575 commonwealth like? Is that a good place for freshman? Because i think i might change my #2 and #3 choices cuz towers isnt too appealing and 575 has private bathrooms…should I do this? SHould I even put 575 first? A girl from my high school is going to BU too for COM and put West as her 2nd choice i think, isn’t that way too far? but i feel like it would be so awesome to be right by the gym and the athletic fields. I don’t know what to do helppp? please haha…ANy inputtttt is welcome

1.) Warren Towers - right next to COM, across the street from CAS, where we'll be taking some classes this upcoming year, so location is good. Also, it is like a mecca social-wise - you'll meet so many people and make a lot of new friends).

2.) West Campus - While it's a bit away from COM, I feel this is the 2nd best option Freshman year. It's a lot like Warren - not as cramped, and there is more of a traditional campus feel with the grassy areas right by it. Also is pretty decent social-wise. Taking the T to class or taking a 10-15 minute walk isn't too bad. Also, as you said, it's right by FitRec, Agganis, and the rest of the Student Village, which is cool.

3.) The Towers - Seems like the "other" major Freshman dorm, so I put it third. Also has a dining hall and a mailroom, things 575 (the HoJo) doesn't.

4.) Bay State Brownstones - We can always dream, right?

5.) 575 Commonwealth (HoJo) - The private bathroom doesn't sound bad, but I've heard that the rooms are cramped since there are mostly triples. Also, they have Late-Nite Cafe, but no dining hall, and no mail room.

Myles and Shelton I've heard are nice, but they're so far away from the main part of campus I didn't even bother putting them on the list. I think Shelton has some upperclassmen as well.

yeah, maybe West is a good choice for second...chances are though we'll end up in Warren because its one of the biggest dorms not only at BU but in the country haha. I think I will change it to West for 2nd. You didn't select that specialty COM floor in Warren, did you?

i'm currently a freshman in COM and i live at west.. at first when i was assigned it, i thought i'd be switching.. especially since they put me in a triple. but i've learned to love it here, even the triple (movable and more furniture.. and more space):
1) the west dining hall is my favorite
2) my view of nickerson field and the charles river is awesome (not all rooms have the view though.. i think it's just the odd-numbered rooms)
3) i'm a 3-minute walk from a big supermarket (shaw's) and a 5-minute walk from an asian supermarket and a bunch of asian restaurants (super88.. i'm chinese.. so it matters to me)
4) i like the west bathrooms better than the ones in warren
5) west is social enough to meet lots of people, but not as much as warren, where i would probably have less private time (even if it depends largely on YOUR choices to meet people, your dorm still has an impact on your social life.)
6) i like the communal bathrooms.. theres never been a time when all the stalls or showers were taken.. and i dont need to clean them myself. and theres no awkwardness of knock knock "hey john, you done with our private bathroom..? i reeeeally need to ****. oh.. you just took a hot shower? that's fine.. a foggy moist bathroom smelling like hot crap!"
7) i'm a 2-minute walk from BU's fitrec (fitness and recreation center).. free weight room, basketball, volleyball, pool, lazy river, track, squash, etc
8) and even if the walk to most of my classes is 15-20 minutes, i enjoy it on good days

i'm sure that if i was assigned warren, i'd be talking about how i'm close to my classes, how warren is the most social, how warren hasn't had 5+ fire alarms go off unlike west, how i'm close to a 24/7 printing lab, etc.. and i'm sure if was assigned a double, i'd be talking about non-lofted beds and other things. but i learned to like what i was assigned.. enough that i'm keeping the same exact room for next year.

your dorm choice doesnt really matter THAT much. plus, don't forget you'll be assigned a roommate, who you'll have absolutely no choice over. you'll need to learn to get along with him/her as much as you'll need to adjust to your dorm assignment. so just do 20 minutes of research, pick a dorm, and get it overwith. if you really really hate both your dorm and your roommate when you get here, you can always try for a room swap. but basically none of the dorms are dungeons, and especially for freshman, none of the "freshman" dorms are THAT much better than the rest.

575 (hojo) has a mail room. it's only when u receive big packages that you'll get a little slip in your mailbox and be directed to the Towers mail room to pick it up (a short walk away).

and 575's triples arent that cramped. none of the freshman dorms are spacious by any means, but i wouldnt say 575 is cramped.

I'll bump this up, old thread, since dorm questions are beginning to come up. My S was in West Freshman yr. Had an awesome view of the river and Boston Skyline. It is a long walk to CAS but very close to Student Village area and Fit Rec Center and new arena. You can hop on the T if you are lazy or consider the walk a chance to get exercise and meet people. Warren is the best though if you have trouble making friends since it is so sociable. WEST dining room is very nice, like a cafe overlooking the field. All have pros and cons. See below.
