Where should I look?

I am a senior in high school and I am looking for colleges. I would prefer schools in the Midwest or east coast. I would also prefer a smaller school. I plan on going to school for either molecular biology and premed or political science and prelaw.
I have around a 3.5 unweighted gpa and a 98.4 weighted. I am in the top 9 percent of my class and my rank will probably be better after the first semester. I have taken the hardest classes my school offers and then some. I am the only person in my class to have taken college classes. My senior year schedule is ap english, ap calculus, ap physics online, college economics, college sociology, French 2, Spanish 4 and band. Overall, I will have 5 AP classes and 3 or 4 college classes which is more than anyone has ever done at my high school.
I have a 1800 sat and a 28 act. I am retaking both because I didn't study for either the first time. I think with studying I will be able to pull off a 30 or more on the December ACT.
My activities are okay. I went to a few decent summer programs. One for biochem and one for law. I went to a leadership one and was the only person at my school selected to go. I also work at summer camp and have completed leadership training and a counselor in training program.
During the school year, I am president of one club. I am also the treasurer of my school's science club and secretary of student government. I am In my schools leadership cabinet, NHS, academic decathlon, and marching band. I also helped start a peer mentoring program at my school.
Some schools I have on my list are
Case Western
Allegheny
Bucknell
Franklin and Marshall
Gettysburg

I really liked Allegheny when I toured I want to find schools similar to it.

have you run any net price calculators? have you spoken to your parents about what they will contribute each year? you’re not going anywhere you cannot afford, so do this right away.

what did you like about Allegheny? state of residency?

I liked the size and the campus. I live in Pennsylvania. I also liked that the classes were writing and discussion based. I will need some financial aid.

Writing / Discussion based classes are abundant at almost every LAC.

What kind of financial aid will you need? Run the NPC and see if the net price is something your family is able / willing to pay.

I did run net price and the prices were okay with my family. Are there other liberal arts colleges that anyone suggests. I need Match and safety schools. I want to go to a school where people like to learn and discuss ideas.

College of Wooster, College of New Jersey, SUNY Binghamton, Ithaca College, and Dickinson would be matches. St. Joe’s, Lycoming, Scranton, Marietta, Seton Hall, and Susquehanna would be academic safeties. I like Wooster and Dickinson best of all the schools you are I have listed.

Don’t forget to check out Juniata. I’m not positive they have molecular Bio, but they are pretty darn good with pre-meds.

This is a great list! My favorite on this list would be The College of NJ. Word around here is that out of staters are typically getting 10k scholarships to bring the cost down around 30k. I think TCNJ is making a concerted effort to bring in out of staters - it’s a school on the move.

Also take a look at Ohio Wesleyan University. Small (about 2,000 students), rigorous, and strong in sciences. Gives excellent merit aid.

97, I would seriously consider looking at Muhlenberg College. They have very good statistics for getting both premed and prelaw students into good programs. They are a small LAC located in Allentown, PA and are pretty good with financial aid too. Best of luck to you!

The OP has indicated that after consultation with family, s/he is shopping colleges on fit not on price.

Since assuming family incompetence would be patronizing, insulting and disrespectful, I suggest we respect this indication by the OP.

hunh, @ClassicRockerDad?

ever since OP noted this in #4, who is it who has patronized, insulted, or shown any disrespect to OP or OP’s family?

I assumed it was preemptive (this is CC after all).

Thanks for helping. I had a teacher tell me about Dickinson College. I will look into it. I applied for a summer program at Muhlenberg but I didn’t get in. Do you think I could get into Gettysburg?

With your current SAT scores I would say you aren’t certain for Bucknell, Gettysburg or Franklin & Marshall unless you can raise them up slightly. I would also add that College of New Jersey largely remains a suitcase school although they are building new dorms and hope to draw more students into staying around on the weekends in the future. I wouldn’t rule out Muhlenberg based on your summer experience. Show them some love by visiting and interviewing and you might be ok there. Best of luck to you!

From what I’ve been hearing Dickinson will be a stretch, unless you are full pay. And then you’ve got a shot.

Check out Temple University, it has an alternative application that doesn’t require SAT at all. Also has a marching band, pre-med and pre-law programs. Decent financial aid for out of state students. If you are a PA resident it’s a no-brainer. You already have the scores/grades to get at least a $5000 merit scholarship there.

Thanks for the suggestions. I forgot to mention that with the exception of case western I don’t want to be in a city. Temple and pitt seem nice it’s just I don’t want to live in the city.

If you need financial aid, I’d suggest you use the net price calculator on their website. If you raise your score to a 30, you would be a good match for those school. However, I am also not very familiar with the schools you mentioned so take my opinion with a grain of salt. Good luck!

Thanks I think that if I study I could most likely raise it to a 30 on the December ACT. Also does anyone know anything about Kenyon College? I received some stuff in the mail and they seem like the type of college I am looking for.
